  Prussia, once a powerful and influential German state, traces its origins back to 1525, when it began as a duchy focused on the region near the southeast coast of the Baltic Sea. Over the centuries, it would grow to play a pivotal role in European history, especially through its military and political influence. Prussia was formally dissolved in 1947 by a decision from the Allies, though its disbandment began much earlier in 1932 when German Chancellor Franz von Papen issued an emergency order transferring the powers of the Prussian government to the central state. The state had been slowly losing its autonomy for years before that, following the turbulent events of the early 20th century. 
  At the height of its power, Prussia was ruled by the House of Hohenzollern, a royal family that presided over its expansive territories and built a military machine renowned for its discipline and effectiveness. Prussia's capital was initially Königsberg, but in 1701, it became Berlin when Prussia elevated itself to the status of a kingdom. Over the years, the Kingdom of Prussia became a major player in European affairs, with its well-organized army enabling it to extend its borders and influence across the continent.

J. Dawson (pseudonyms Major Dawson, Howard Kerr, Nicholas Freydon) was an English author, traveller and novelist. During World War I he attained the rank of Major, and was awarded the MBE and Croix de Guerre in recognition of his work as a military propagandist, a work the listener may want to keep in mind. The Battle of the Somme has been called the beginning of modern all-arms warfare, during which Kitchener's Army learned to fight the mass-industrial war, which the continental armies had been engaged in for two years. This view sees the British contribution to the battle as part of a coalition war and part of a process, which took the strategic initiative from the German Army and caused it irreparable damage, leading to its collapse in late 1918.   Maajid Nawaz spent his teenage years listening to American hip-hop and learning about the radical Islamist movement spreading throughout Europe and Asia in the 1980s and ’90s. At sixteen, he was already a ranking member in Hizb ut-Tahrir, a London-based Islamist group. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a top recruiter, a charismatic spokesman for the cause of uniting Islam’s political power across the world. Nawaz was setting up satellite groups in Pakistan, Denmark, and Egypt when he was rounded up in the aftermath of 9/11 along with many other radical Muslims.  
  He was sent to an Egyptian prison where he was, fortuitously, jailed along with the assassins of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat. Twenty years in prison had changed the assassins’ views on Islam and violence; Maajid went into prison preaching to them about the Islamist cause, but the lessons ended up going the other way. He came out of prison four years later completely changed, convinced that his entire belief system had been wrong and determined to do something about it.  
  He met with activists and heads of state, built a network, and started a foundation, Quilliam, to combat the rising Islamist tide in Europe and elsewhere, using his intimate knowledge of recruitment tactics in order to reverse extremism and persuade Muslims that the “narrative” used to recruit them—that the West is evil and the cause of all Muslim suffering—is false. Radical is a fascinating and important look into one man’s journey out of extremism and into something else entirely.
