The Climbing Bible: Climb Injury Free is the indispensable guide to injury prevention and rehabilitation for climbers. The author, Stian Christophersen, is an internationally renowned climber who has competed and coached at international level; he is also a practising physiotherapist with over 15 years' experience, specialising in the treatment of climbing injuries.
The third book in the bestselling Climbing Bible series, it describes the most common climbing injuries that the author frequently encounters in his clinical practice, and examines how they can be diagnosed and treated – and even prevented from occurring in the first place. It is designed to be scientifically strong, yet presented simply, so that it can make an important contribution to the knowledge base that healthcare professionals refer to when treating climbers, yet also be easily accessible to climbers who do not have a healthcare background.
The book is split into three parts and features anatomical illustrations along with exercise and action photos. The first part gives an essential overview of factors which can influence injuries and rehab, such as sleep, training load, warming up, differences related to age and gender, and strength training. Part two focuses on the common injuries experienced by climbers – including pulley injuries, elbow tendinopathies and hamstring ruptures, as well as growth plate injuries in young climbers – and advice about how to rehab or prevent these common injuries. And the third part explores the fascinating subject of pain science – what the sensation of pain really means, and how we interpret and can influence our experience of pain.

“OUR IDENTITY IS INTENSITY,” declares Liverpool FC assistant-manager Pep Lijnders in this compelling account of the 2021/22 season, and from the very first chapter he takes us on a footballing thrill-ride we will never forget.

Liverpool’s blistering brand of football has revived a sleeping giant, energised its vast army of fans, entertained crowds at home and all over the world, and redefined coaching excellence.

Now Pep tells the inside story of a season which, even by LFC standards, has been truly sensational. Week by week as the drama unfolds it’s all here: from pre-season to unforgettable finale; great goals and gruelling schedules; passionate team-talks and personal reflections; unsung heroes and Kop idols; the pride and the passion, the joy and the heartache… and the fun.

In his own engaging and inspiring style, Pep takes readers behind-the-scenes at Anfield, the AXA Training Centre and the team hotel; on the pitch, in the dugout and back in the dressing-room away from the media glare.

In forming a ‘one-club’ mentality, Jürgen Klopp, Lijnders and co have also created countless modern memories for the LFC family, and this unique book chronicles their legacy.

    Tony Gale: That’s Entertainment...

In a footballing career spanning 21 years, Tony Gale played over 720 games on almost every league pitch across the four divisions. He is one of only 16 players in the UK to have played over 300 games for two teams and one of a handful to be part of a Premier League winning side. As a pundit he’s commentated on over 3,000 live games for the likes of Sky and Capital Gold, covering virtually every major football competition in his inimitable light hearted manner.

Gale made his first team debut at Fulham Football Club at the ripe age of 16, before being made captain at 18. Playing alongside a golden era of greats, the anecdotes which Gale recounts while playing alongside George Best, Bobby Moore and Rodney Marsh are a nostalgic masterclass. Moving to West Ham for the next decade, the Pimlico born defender was part of the iconic ‘Boys of 86’ squad, which broke 17 records that year, 16 of which are still unbeaten.

Exiting at his lowest point from West Ham in 1994, with two weeks to go before the new season, Gale was in effect homeless and jobless in footballing terms. That however all changed when he landed a place at Blackburn Rovers. Sir Kenny Dalglish recalled the decision to include 35-year-old Gale into the squad of 94/95. “His experience was a big help and the positive impact he made in the dressing room was excellent. He made his contribution to us winning the league, same as everybody on that team.”

Void of any media training, Gale’s move into radio and television commentary in the late 90’s was as natural as kicking a ball. In the words of Chris Kamara, “The one thing that stayed with Galey is that dressing room humour, which you all miss when you stop playing football. The one liners, the windups. Galey brought them from the dressing room and into real life.”

    Heavyweight - Black Boxers and...

    Jordana Moore Saggese

In Heavyweight, Jordana Moore Saggese examines images of Black heavyweight boxers to map the visual terrain of racist ideology in the United States, paying particular attention to the intersecting discourses of Blackness, masculinity, and sport. Looking closely at the "shadow archive" of portrayals across fine art, vernacular imagery, and public media at the turn of the twentieth century, she demonstrates how the images of boxers reveal the racist stereotypes implicit in them, many of which continue to structure ideas of Black men today. With a focus on both anonymous fighters and notorious champions, including Jack Johnson, Saggese contends that popular images of these men provided white spectators a way to render themselves experts on Blackness and Black masculinity. These images became the blueprint for white conceptions of the Black male body—existing between fear and fantasy, simultaneously an object of desire and an instrument of violence. Reframing boxing as yet another way whiteness establishes the violent mythology of its supremacy, Saggese highlights the role of imagery in normalizing a culture of anti-Blackness.
