 Jim Corbett became the hero of thousands of impoverished local families in the remote Indian region of Kumaon when, throughout the 1920s and 30s, he answered their pleas to rid them of the man-eating tigers and leopards which were ravaging their populations. Man-eaters roamed a region of hundreds of square miles over several years, killing the defenceless villagers at will: for example the Champawat man-eater had killed over 434 people in six years, the Panar maneater over 400. 
   
 Jim, one of 15 children, was born in 1875 to the local post-master in Nainital, and taught himself as a barefoot boy in his local jungle to become, in his spare time one, of the most skilled trackers of his day, fluent in the local dialects, patient beyond endurance and an excellent shot. 
   
 Duff Hart Davis' biography threads together the life of this very private, unassuming Indian railway clerk. Often through Jim's own written words, Duff sets out the highlights of Jim's adventures in sequence and in context, thus thowing light on Jim's remarkable character.

The ancient city of Babylon, nestled along the banks of the Euphrates River in what is now modern-day Iraq, was once the heart of a thriving and sophisticated civilization. As early as the third millennium BCE, this region—Mesopotamia—was home to great cities, towering ziggurats, and a people whose innovations would echo through history. Babylon, in particular, rose to prominence under rulers like Hammurabi and later Nebuchadnezzar II, becoming a center of law, culture, architecture, and religion. It was in this complex and multilayered society that women of various classes and backgrounds lived lives shaped by intricate social structures, religious practices, and evolving legal systems. 
Life in ancient Babylon was deeply hierarchical, with power distributed according to class, gender, and occupation. At the top of society were the royal family and elite nobles, followed by priests, scribes, merchants, and skilled artisans. Below them were laborers, slaves, and other commoners. Women existed in all these layers of society and their roles, rights, and opportunities were directly influenced by their social standing. Elite women might serve as priestesses or manage large households and estates, while lower-class women often labored in agriculture, textile production, or domestic service. Despite the limitations placed on them by patriarchal norms, Babylonian women carved out meaningful spaces for themselves in both public and private life. 
Religion was a central pillar of Babylonian culture and offered women specific roles within its framework. Temples were among the most powerful institutions, and women—especially those from noble or priestly families—could attain influential positions as priestesses. These women oversaw rituals, managed temple property, and acted as intermediaries between the divine and human realms.

Alan Mathison Turing was a mathematician, computer system researcher, scholar, cryptanalyst, thinker, and theoretical biologist from the U.K. With the Turing device, which can be considered a design of a general-purpose computer system, Turing had a substantial influence on the development of theoretical computer technology, offering a formalization of the ideas of algorithm and calculation. Turing is considered the creator of theoretical computer technology and AI.
Turing was born in Maida Vale, London, and raised in the south of England. He earned a mathematics degree from King's College, Cambridge. He released a presentation suggesting that some simple math-- no questions can never ever be replied by computer system while a fellow at Cambridge, built a Turing device, and went on to reason that the Turing device's stopping issue is undecidable.
He got his PhD from Princeton University's Department of Mathematics in 1938. Turing worked for the Federal government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain's codebreaking center where Ultra intelligence was developed, throughout WWII. He led Hut 8, the area in charge of German navy cryptanalysis, for a time. Here, he developed some methods for breaking German ciphers quicker, including but not limited to adjustments to the pre-war Polish bombe gadget, an electromechanical system that could recognize Enigma device settings.
Turing contributed to analyzing obstructed coded signals that permitted the Allies to beat the Axis powers in some crucial fights, including but not limited to the Battle of the Atlantic.
