Since her play Steel opened in her native Sheffield in 2018, Chris Bush has rapidly become one of the UK's most successful and widely staged playwrights, with her plays on stage at the National Theatre, in the West End, and across Europe. Celebrated for her spirited dissections of power, female agency and northern identity, her work is infused with wit, empathy, and a powerful sense of place and belonging.
Included here are five of her plays, all first performed between 2018 and 2021, together with a revealing introduction in which she reflects on the tumultuous period from which they emerged.
Steel (Sheffield Theatres, 2018) is a political epic constructed from minimal resources, a two-hander spanning three decades of women in politics. 'Sharp, witty and uncannily topical' The Stage

Octopus Mind

Octopus Mind plays with an array of rich and original metaphors to explore the intricacies of neurodiversity, perception and the human mind. These poems articulate the desire to understand and be understood by oneself and others in a complex world. They observe the nuances of creativity, art, relationships, and self-expression through the lens of neurodiversity, reflecting on the poet's experience of being diagnosed with dyspraxia as an adult. They delve into the challenges of neurodiversity, but also reveal its gifts.
Poems respond to visual artists like Gwen John, whose paintings break new ground for women representing their own visions of themselves. Other poems suggest that this can be a struggle however, as Pablo Picasso paints not a woman but his own despair in 'Blue Nude', while Elizabeth Siddal reflects on her own image, fetishized by the Pre-Raphaelite painters, and Henri Rousseau's painting becomes an outlet for self-deception and frustration. 
Some of the most stunning poems in this collection perform a kind of magic or sleight of hand, as dyspraxia is explored through unique and remarkable metaphors, including a series of artefacts in a museum, a walk along the seashore, and a swaying tree. The 'Octopus Mind' evokes the possibilities of what it means to be human, through obsession, self-deception, realisation, and acceptance.
The speaker in Octopus Mind is endearingly humble and we journey with them beyond self-criticism to reclaiming the self. In 'Growing', the narrator declares 'I will grow // into myself, climbing, steady, / grip by grip, leaf by leaf'. In 'Understood' the narrator describes the complex process of re-imagining one's place in the world, armed with new knowledge: 'Slowly, we adjust / our own soft ignorance / unroll our prejudice / in gentle waves.'

Downstairs, his estranged wife plots the restoration of the family name. When her sister arrives unannounced, she triggers a desperate showdown with the past.
Henrik Ibsen's most contemporary play and his penultimate, John Gabriel Borkman is gripping, penetrating and savagely funny. This version by Lucinda Coxon premiered at the Bridge Theatre, London, in September 2022, directed by Nicholas Hytner, with a cast led by Clare Higgins, Simon Russell Beale and Lia Williams.

Based on true events, England's Martyr is the opening book in a trilogy depicting the rise of the historically existing English hero, Edmund Ironside.
1010 AD: After years of inept rule and incessant invasion, England is on the brink of ruin, its people brutalised and its lands ravaged from wave after wave of Norse marauders.
As the country cracks under yet another assault – this time from the fearsome hordes of the cruel heathen warlord, Thorkell the Tall – a single nobleman, Ulfcytel, has set himself to raising an army, thinking it better to fight and perhaps prevail rather than wait for his ill-advised king, Ethelred, to make himself useful.
Whilst Ulfcytel rallies his forces, he is surprised to find reinforcements arriving from elsewhere, some of them led by Alaric – a heroic and Godly man from the lands of Wessex. Inspired by Alaric’s fortitude, Ulfcytel agrees on a daring plan, thinking he has a chance to eliminate Thorkell and thus cut the head from the heathen horde before battle is joined.
Unbeknownst to either Ulfcytel or Alaric, their absent King Ethelred has plans of his own, plans that will leave them at risk of not only their foreign enemies but the blades of traitors from within their own ranks.
Before all is lost, the two heroes realise they must confront the corruption beating at the heart of England, and in doing so set the stage for the emergence of a new contender for the throne. A man known to history as Edmund. Edmund Ironside.
Caution: This book is set during a particularly traumatic episode in English history that involved extreme military and societal upheaval. The story thus depicts repeated instances of physical conflict/violence, including some which are of a sexual nature. Reader discretion is advised.
