Since the early days of human warfare, which may date back to the Stone Age, combatants have sought to gain an advantage through the acquisition of secret information. With the growth of technology, a parallel advantage was sought through the application of numerous types of torture. In the 19th century, the concept of manipulation was added to military tactics, an attempt to influence the minds of assassins, double agents, and world leaders alike to act against their natures. Given the incredible advances in technology brought about by global warfare, the years immediately after World War II would bring about the most extensive formal study of the many procedures by which this effect could be accomplished.
The push to develop torture and manipulation techniques was driven by an “exaggerated fear”[1] propagated by the American military and national press of “mind-control.” American officials believed that Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean communists had reached the “Holy Grail”[2] of mental warfare, and that the United States must follow suit or be left behind. In time, the “transformation of brainwashing from a system of coercive propaganda to a secret program of human enslavement”[3] reflected cultural demands placed on the idea by the Korean War and was preceded by interest in electromagnetics. To the embarrassment of many Americans, 5,000 of the 7,200 American POWs in North Korea signed confessions and petitions to end the war. Most recanted their actions once free, but many did not, and some refused to return to their homeland.
In the end, the peak of the American experimental regimen on unwitting humans grew to vast proportions and splintered into a myriad of disciplines by the mid-20th century. The program came to be known as MK-Ultra after several early incarnations, and to this day, the name has become synonymous with controversy, even as the program’s experiments and results remain relatively mysterious.

Psychological intimidation refers to the use of mental tactics to instill fear, compliance, or submission in others. Unlike physical intimidation, which involves overt threats or aggressive behavior, psychological intimidation operates on a more subtle, covert level. It involves manipulating emotions, perceptions, and thought processes to control or influence an individual’s actions, often without them realizing they are being intimidated. This form of intimidation can be just as harmful as physical aggression, as it undermines the victim’s sense of security, autonomy, and well-being.
At its core, psychological intimidation is about the exertion of power. The intimidator uses fear or the threat of harm—whether real or perceived—to influence or dominate another person. It is often used in relationships, workplaces, and social dynamics where there is an imbalance of power. This type of intimidation can be subtle, often taking the form of guilt-tripping, manipulation, isolation, or the use of authority to control another’s behavior. It might include behaviors like silent treatment, constant criticism, gaslighting, or passive-aggressive actions, all designed to make the victim feel inadequate, fearful, or uncertain.
The effects of psychological intimidation are often long-lasting. Victims may experience anxiety, depression, and a diminished sense of self-worth. Over time, the individual may begin to question their own judgment, doubt their abilities, or feel that they are powerless to make decisions without the approval of the intimidator. This can create a cycle where the victim is more susceptible to future manipulation or control, reinforcing the power dynamic.

Father Charles Coughlin was a controversial Canadian-American Catholic priest based in Michigan. Calling for monetary reforms, the nationalization of major industries and railroads, and protection of the rights of labor, Coughlin used weekly radio broadcasts to reach a mass audience of up to thirty million listeners during the 1930s.
An early supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, Coughlin later became a harsh critic. Coughlin’s commentary also became more anti-semitic, and he supported some of the fascist policies of Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito. As a result, many American Catholic leaders, as well as the Vatican, wanted Coughlin silenced. After the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the Roosevelt administration finally forced the cancellation of his radio program and forbade the dissemination of his newspaper, Social Justice.
In this recording, Coughlin the plight of farmers, oppressive bankers, and a living wage for American workers.

Aggression is rampant almost everywhere nowadays, sometimes in its legal and approved form and increasingly in illegal activities. Where it is approved, it may be called “getting on in the world,” that is, stepping on others’ heads so that you can get to the top. This is success in a worldly sense, but not in a Buddhist one. It is also approved of for men (though not by them for women!) as being a mark of mastery and virility, yet it will never bring happiness. For if people are mastered forcibly, then how will happiness follow for the one who inflicts suffering? The rationale is that “progress,” that materialistic god so widely worshipped, will not come about unless force and power are used. But this argument does not take into account the fact that, sooner or later, what is won by aggression will surely be lost through conflict.
