Synopsis

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens -  is an 1859 historical novel by Charles Dickens, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The novel tells the story of the French Doctor Manette, his 18-year-long imprisonment in the Bastille in Paris, and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie whom he had never met.

The story is set against the conditions that led up to the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. In the Introduction to the Encyclopedia of Adventure Fiction, critic Don D'Ammassa argues that it is an adventure novel because the protagonists are in constant danger of being imprisoned or killed.

As Dickens's best-known work of historical fiction, A Tale of Two Cities is claimed to be one of the best-selling novels of all time. In 2003, the novel was ranked 63rd on the BBC's The Big Read poll. The novel has been adapted for film, television, radio, and the stage, and has continued to influence popular culture.

Book Two in the After School Detective Club series.

Joe can't believe his luck when his dad rents a castle for their Easter holidays - but is devastated when his mum receives a better invitation and the trip is cancelled. Determined to have his holiday, Joe develops an elaborate plan to go with his friends instead.

The castle is everything the friends had hoped for: a partially restored ruin with a moat, a Saxon chapel, spiral staircases and an ancient burial mound that gives it an air of mystery. But it's not long before they hear strange noises underground and notice yellow eyes lurking in the forest. And when Sherlock falls through some rotten boards and into an old well, they discover an ancient box, containing a 200-year-old notebook and an incomplete treasure map.

The race is on. The After School Detective Club is on the trail of Ragnar's gold - a hoard of treasure said to have been buried by a Viking warrior and guarded by his demon hound . . . that is, unless someone else gets there first.
