An illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women—across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more—whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as "muses" to history's better-known men.  What does it mean to be someone's "muse"? Historically, to be called a “muse” among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman’s greatness—but only in her support of another.I'm Not Your Muse reclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from "The Mother of the Movies" Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations—including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames—by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, they highlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women. Featured women include: Louise Blanchard Bethune Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore Minnette de Silva Clara Driscoll Jessie Redmon Fauset Loie Fuller Martha Gellhorn    Eileen Gray Belle da Costa Greene Alice Guy-Blaché Miss La La Edmonia Lewis Neysa McMein Hildreth Meière Lucia Moholy May and Jane Morris    Na Hye-Sŏk Fernande Olivier Pan Yuliang    Ethel Reed    Clara Rockmore    Ada Bricktop Smith Maria Tallchief Alice B. Amy’s life has been a rollercoaster of highs and lows. She married actor Will Arnett, had two sons, and navigated the pressures of balancing a family and a demanding career. She writes candidly about her time on Saturday Night Live (SNL), her divorce from Will Arnett, and her lessons about life, work, and love. One chapter features Seth Meyers’ account of what happened the weekend her first son, Archie, was born. Another chapter includes a funny letter Amy wrote to herself about the unrealistic expectations she had going into motherhood.
Despite her success, Amy has always been a realist. She reflects on mistakes, including a controversial joke she made on SNL about a disabled person. When she realized her error, she made sure to track down the individual and apologize. In doing so, she learned a valuable lesson about compassion, forgiveness, and owning up to your mistakes.
Amy’s journey took her from working the comedy circuit in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles to finding her breakout role as Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation. Along the way, she met and collaborated with comedy legends like Tina Fey and Seth Meyers, both of whom played key roles in shaping her career.

Scotland’s greatest export. The world’s first super spy. Voted the sexiest man on the planet. Sir Sean Connery was a titanic figure on screen and off for over half a century. Behind the son of a factory worker, growing up in near-poverty on the harsh streets of pre-war Edinburgh, lay a timeless array of motion pictures that spanned multiple decades and saw Connery work across the globe with directors as diverse as Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay. And amongst them his greatest role, whether he liked it or not – Bond, James Bond. Author A. J. Black delves into Connery’s life for more than mere biography, exploring not just the enormously varied pictures he made including crowd pleasing blockbusters such as The Untouchables or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, serious-minded fare in The Hill or The Offence, and his strange sojourns into eclectic fantasy with Zardoz or Time Bandits, but also the sweep of a career that crossed movie eras as well as decades. From skirmishes with the angry young men of the British New Wave, via becoming the cinematic icon of the 1960s as 007, through to a challenging reinvention as a unique older actor of stature in the 1980s, this exploration of the Cinematic Connery shows just how much his work reflected the changing movie-going tastes, political realities and cultural trends of the 20th century, and beyond . . .
