A hidden Clerkenwell refuge, a watchful neighbour – and a narrowing gap between paranoia and perception.
After years on the move, Mark hopes for peace in a secluded London house once used as a music studio. Hidden behind Georgian terraces, it feels like the perfect retreat... until small disturbances begin to ripple beneath the surface. A glance held too long. A neighbour who knows too much. Watchers who linger.
A routine planning request triggers something deeper, that seems too coordinated to be pure chance. As unease grows, Mark begins to suspect the house holds more than memories. But in an age of constant surveillance, what separates paranoia from perception?
Such an Odd Word to Use is a quietly unsettling psychological mystery novella for the digital age, where even silence may be scripted.

First published posthumously in 1896, Weir of Hermiston is widely regarded as one of Robert Louis Stevenson's most powerful and mature novels, a dark and compelling exploration of authority, justice, and human conflict.

Set in early 19th-century Scotland, the novel centers on the intense and tragic relationship between Archie Weir and his father, Adam Weir, the formidable Lord Hermiston. As a harsh and unyielding judge, Lord Hermiston embodies the rigid moral and legal authority of his time, ruling from the bench with uncompromising severity. Archie, sensitive and idealistic, struggles to reconcile his sense of justice and compassion with his father's cold absolutism.

Seeking refuge from this oppressive relationship, Archie retreats to the countryside, where he becomes entangled in a passionate and dangerous romance that draws him into a web of jealousy, betrayal, and violence. As personal loyalties clash with moral duty, the novel builds toward an inevitable and haunting tragedy.

Stevenson's prose in Weir of Hermiston is rich, atmospheric, and psychologically profound. Through vividly drawn characters and a stark Scottish landscape, he examines the destructive consequences of inflexible authority and the emotional cost of moral rigidity. Although left unfinished at Stevenson's death, the novel remains remarkably complete in its emotional power and thematic depth.

Weir of Hermiston stands as a masterwork of classic literature—somber, intense, and deeply human. It is an essential read for those who appreciate literary fiction that confronts the complexities of justice, family, and the darker corners of the human heart.

René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke was born into a troubled marriage on the 4th December 1875 in Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His mother, having previously lost a baby girl, would dress the young boy up in girl’s clothing.
Later his father dispatched him to a military academy at age 10 but after a miserable 5 years the young Rilke left due to illness and instead entered first Prague and then Munich and finally Berlin university to study art history, philosophy and literature.
His initial forays into literature was in poetry. His intense, mystical and lyrical style was much admired and over time inspired many in succeeding generations.
His short prose collection ‘Stories of God’, written in an impassioned burst over several nights was published in 1900 and offers a beguiling view of much of Rilke’s influences and outlook.
The following year he married the pioneering sculptor and artist Clara Westhoff. The union produced one child, a daughter Ruth.
He lived in Paris for most of the Century’s first decade where he mixed with many great minds of the time. Although he continued to write he also worked as a secretary to the sculptor, Rodin.
It was only after they settled in Switzerland in 1919 that his writing output was in full flow. Here he wrote profusely in both German and French, which included much on his previous travels, his left-wing sympathies, his religious and existential thoughts, all part of a unique and consummate style.
From 1923 on, Rilke increasingly struggled with his health which was now in constant decline and often spent time rehabilitating at a sanatorium.
Rainer Maria Rilke died of leukaemia on the 29th December 1926 in Montreux, Switzerland. He was 51.

“Into his fateful heap of days the soul of man is cast.”
Only a few months from his fiftieth year, Nikolas is feeling a distinct wobble in his formidable certainties. Aleksey Primakov appears to have become irrelevant. All he needs, therefore, is to be dragged into an adventure with Devon's answer to the three musketeers. How many times can he tell Ben and his moronic friends that a mutilated body buried on Dartmoor has nothing to do with them? But not only does this desecration slowly become their business, it cuts to the heart of the life they have created together. It's just as well, perhaps, that Generals never do actually retire...
