«Novel·la familiar (a la manera antiga)». Així és com Attilio Bertolucci es refereix a El dormitori, un dels llibres importants de la literatura italiana del segle XX. Un meravellós poema narratiu publicat inicialment en dos volums separats, els anys 1984 i 1988, que ara presentem en la primera traducció europea completa.
És una autobiografia «dibuixada en somni», un poema riu que flueix per l'arbre genealògic dels Bertolucci i els fets principals de la història italiana: Casarola i els Apenins, la casa dels avantpassats entre castanyers, el pare terratinent i la mare inquieta, la infantesa i la joventut entre Parma i el camp, l'amor per Ninetta, els fills Bernardo i Giuseppe —futurs cineastes—, la vaga camperola de 1908, la violència feixista i la dolorosa batuda nazi de 1944.
Enmig d'una sofisticada i minuciosa construcció de la memòria familiar, hi destaca el dormitori, que «té com a finalitat principal / el pecat dels cònjuges, però aviat / es fa còmplice d'un amor que mai / no podrà / trobar assossec damunt la terra».
