  بعد أحداث الحرب العالمية الأولى وبعد الثورة المصرية وبالعام ١٩١٩م؛ ظهرت أنواع من الحرية لم تعرفها الأمة العربية منذ انتهاء زمن ازدهارها الغابر، فكان أول من سابق لنيل تلك الحرية الكتاب والأدباء الذين نشروا مقالات في الصحف تطرق مواضيع لم تكن متاحة من قبل، ومارسوا حرية تكاد تكون مطلقة، لتظهر نزعة التجديد في النتاج الأدبي الحديث لتلك المرحلة؛ فقد ابتكروا مذاهبهم في القصة ونظم الشعر وكتابة المقال، فقامت الثورة على كل ما هو قديم، وقد نتج بعض الخصومة الأدبية الواسعة بين من اعتنق النهج الحديث ومن انتهج القديم. الحالة الأدبية في تلك المرحلة كانت الشاغل للوسط الثقافي، وفي هذا الكتاب يعرض "طه حسين" عميد الأدب العربي تلك الحالة رغم كونه أحد أنصار التجديد ورواده ويحاول أن يلتزم الحياد به.
