لهذا عنَي مؤلف هذا الكتاب أن نشر له بعض قصائد من شعره هن عيون الشعر ، ويقينا أنه يحل أسمى محل من نفوس القراء فقد يجد فيه الأديب والمتأدب ضروبا من الآداب العربية والأفكار العصرية كما يجد فيه الحكيم عبرة وعظة نافعة والسياسي آراء في السياسة صائبة وأنواعا من الدهاء مختلفة.
وغني عن البيان أن شوقي بك بالنسبة لعصره المتحضر، وامتلاء أيامه بالحوادث الجسام، وما أثر في نفسه مما رأى في الشرق والغرب وما وقف عليه من تاريخ الأقدمين وآثار الغابرين وأمور الحاضرين وما طبع عليه من النبوغ والعبقرية، جعلته في منزلة فوق منزلة غيره من معاصريه.
وقد اختار المؤلف أن يسمي كتابه هذا "كرمة بن هانئ" اقتداء بأميرالشعراء في تسمية بيته في مطرية الزيتون بهذا الاسم.
