  تدور أحداث الرواية فى ثلاث محاور رئيسية ، فنجد محور أحداث فى فرنسا يشمل انطوان الصحفى و مصطفى فاضل باشا الأخ الأصغر للخديوى إسماعيل ، فنتعرف من خلالهما على العلاقة بين الأخوين و الصراع على حكم مصر ، و التعرف على ماضى انطوان و تفاصيل حياته و ما ارتكبه من جرائم التى ستحيل حياته لجحيم  .
  و فى محور آخر يدور فى مصر نرى الأمور من وجهة نظر الخديوى إسماعيل و حكمه على أخيه و على ما يحققه من مشاريع و أمنيته التى تراوده أثناء حكمه للبلاد ، و نرى المقاومة التى يقودها شبان من مختلف الطبقات لتنحية الخديوى إسماعيل عن الحكم اعتراضا على طريقته فى حكم مصر حيث يتعاونوا مع موظفين من الدائرة السنية و بعض ضباط الجيش و التى ستبوء محاولاتهم بالفشل فى عزل الخديوى ، و  عبدالحفيظ طوماطر و عائلته الداعمين لحكم الخديوى و الذين سيكونون جواسيس له فى كشف المؤامرة التى تدبر له ، و ستضعه خيانته للشباب فى ورطة بقتل بعض أبنائه .
  كذلك نرى ألمظ المغنية الشهيرة فى بدايتها و صعودها على أكتاف ساكنة بك ذائعة الصيت التى ستعتزل الغناء ، و كيف تعرفت ألمظ على المطرب عبده الحامولى حتى أصبجت صوت مصر الأول ، و تشابكها مع عائلة طوماطر و المقاومة .
  و تنتهى الرواية بنهاية حكم الخديوى إسماعيل الذى لم يجن ثمار ما سعى إليه لينتهى به الأمر بخسارة بلاده كأخيه ، فكلاهما لم يصلا لمبتغاهما و أنهيا حياتهما بعيدا عن وطنهما بعد فقدان العرش .
