  La figura del serial killer costituisce la lente attraverso cui Simone Sauza legge alcuni fondamentali nodi filosofici e culturali, dalla rappresentazione della violenza agli aspetti più oscuri della sessualità. La domanda centrale che l'autore si pone, avventurandosi nella mente e nella storia dei personaggi più celebri della cronaca nera globale, riguarda ciò che un omicida seriale vede "quando guarda il mondo che abbiamo in comune": è in questo senso che, come sottolinea Luciano Funetta nella prefazione, si potrebbe sostenere che "tutto ciò che Sauza scrive sia il tentativo di restituzione di uno sguardo impossibile. Che il soggetto titolare dello sguardo sia, in questo caso, l'omicida seriale ha forse un'importanza relativa, perché l'opera di indagine che viene portata avanti in Tutto era cenere ha un intento più vasto". L'esperienza del serial killer costituisce un caso limite dell'esperienza umana, dunque proprio per questo, al di là delle interpretazioni strettamente criminologiche, l'atto seriale di uccidere rivela l'intima fragilità di concetti come io, interiorità, mondo. In questo libro che oscilla tra saggio e autofiction, le parole di filosofi e scrittori, oltre all'analisi di film e fenomeni web, accompagnano il lettore in un percorso narrativo e fenomenologico che si articola tra trauma, influenza dei media, desiderio e soprattutto sguardo. Perché, scrive Sauza, il serial killer "abita lo stesso pezzo di realtà di ogni individuo, ma lo attraversa con uno sguardo che viene da un altrove", restituendoci così una lettura altra di ciò che abbiamo sotto gli occhi.
