Sinossi

Big Data Surveillance explores the pervasive world of data collection by corporations and governments, revealing how our digital footprints impact individual privacy and societal control. The book examines the techniques used to gather and analyze personal data, the ethical dilemmas arising from its usage, and the legal frameworks intended to safeguard our information. Did you know that algorithms can inadvertently perpetuate biases, leading to unequal outcomes for certain groups? Understanding these dynamics is crucial in an era where our digital lives are constantly monitored. This book uniquely links corporate and governmental surveillance, highlighting their interconnectedness and the challenges they pose to privacy. By examining the historical evolution of data collection and its social implications, it empowers readers to critically assess current practices. It progresses from introducing big data surveillance to exploring data economics, algorithmic influence, and culminates with solutions such as policy recommendations and personal privacy strategies.

The Protestant Reformation, despite often being associated with the symbolic figure of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517, cannot be reduced to a single, abrupt, and exceptional event. Rather, it must be traced to a much longer process of spiritual, social, and intellectual transformation that unfolded over the late medieval period. This historiographical perspective acknowledges the deep-rooted need for a Reformation, transforming the period between the 14th and 16th centuries into a genuine “Age of Reformation.” Authors such as Eric Leland Saak emphasize that criticisms of ecclesiastical authority and calls for reform (sola scriptura) were already evident in the preceding centuries. In fact, reformers John Wycliffe and Jan Hus, who lived several decades before Luther, anticipated central themes of the Reformation, laying the foundations for a critique, making Luther’s actions not the beginning of a secular movement but the culmination of it.
The Counter-Reformation was the Catholic Church's specific reaction to the Protestant Reformation, and it is often characterised as the acceptance of certain demands for ecclesiastical renewal, which Luther, Calvin, and other reformers had also emphasized. The Catholic Church began to change various aspects such as the training of priests, residence requirements for bishops, and combating immorality among the clergy, but the Counter-Reformation was also quite polemical and defensive to prevent other Catholics from converting to the Evangelical Churches. Some forms of these defensive measures consisted of catechisms, sacred art, and popular devotion, but the Church also resorted to violent repression of Evangelical Christianity, with the Vatican often collaborating with Catholic countries on the continent. By the end of the Counter-Reformation, Europe had suffered through the Thirty Years' War, one of the deadliest wars in history.

Whether you remember them or not, dreams are a normal part of sleep. Everyone dreams for about two hours per night, and dreams can occur during any stage of sleep, although they're most vivid during the REM phase. Suppose you've ever woken up from a happy dream feeling relaxed and rested or a scary one feeling on edge. In that case, you might have wondered whether the content of your shut-eye reveries can make a difference in your overall sleep quality.Dream content often relates back to what's happening in your waking life. If you're experiencing low stress and plenty of satisfaction in your day-to-day life, you may have more positive dreams. By contrast, if you're depressed or anxious during the day, you may have more unpleasant dreams and compromised sleep quality at night. The good news is that while you cannot control your dreams directly, you can work on improving your state of mind during the day. This book investigates theories concerning the function of dreams and dreams, starting with Freud's contributions to the present day. Several ideas within psychodynamic, evolutionary, and neurocognitive perspectives are presented and discussed in light of relevant empirical research. These include theories that postulate that the function of dreaming is to guard sleep and approaches which propose that dreaming poses an adaptive advantage either by allowing for the simulation and rehearsal of threat avoidance behaviors, practicing social skills, solving emotional or intellectual problems, or aids us in the consolidation of memories.

In The Healing Way I share with you my journey through a life burdened by abuse. My hope is that my journey and all that I learned will be a catalyst for your own growth. If you are read¬ing this, I know you have the desire to live without the pain of abuse. You have the same desire to live a healthy life that everyone has. I also know you have more courage within than you think. And somehow the courage will give you the ability to take the risks necessary to change your life. By sharing my journey and all the things I learned, I want to bring you hope. Hope that you can recover from abuse and live a healthy, functional life. In this book, I write about behaviors and attitudes which will help you become a better person. I am not writing about being a good person. Nor am I saying you will become a person who meets others’ expecta¬tions. Becoming a better person means to me, and I hope it begins to mean to you:a person who is willing to learn new behaviors, become more self-aware, and see other perspectives of the pain deep within. The Healing Way talks about the complexities and dynamics of abuse. The behaviors and practices to learn to become a health¬ier person. Specific steps for healing and simple, human knowledge which we rarely learn from parents, teachers, or peers. I had to author this book, because I have experienced and seen the pain abuse brings to individ¬uals, our culture, and our world. From my heart, I hope The Healing Way will help you live a more fulfilling life. Rev. Lillie Henley
