Mia Strauss is trying to be a good mother. She’s worked hard to build a stable life since losing her memory at eighteen when an assailant pushed her from the third-story landing of her parents’ gold coast mansion. But lately, Mia is losing control and feels she’s being watched wherever she goes. She is taking more and more of her prescription drugs to quiet the rising panic and anxiety. But when her husband, Alexander, comes home to find her face down on their living room floor, she’s at risk of losing her girls.
Alexander Strauss, neuropsychologist and professor at Columbia University, can no longer trust his wife. Her behavior and moods have grown evermore erratic. She takes plenty of medication but doesn’t make any progress. She has become a danger to herself, and their children. It is believed that Mia will never be able to remember, but Alexander has other ideas. Based on her recent brain images, Alexander is confident Mia’s continued amnesia is psychological. She doesn’t want to remember. He gives her an ultimatum, either she gets real help, or he’ll leave her and take the girls.
Desperate to save her marriage and keep her family, Mia signs up for a therapy she’s never tried—an experimental treatment that hypothesizes psilocybin may help traumatized patients process and recover their forgotten lives. But as Mia makes progress and her history begins to take shape, it becomes apparent that those closest to Mia never want her to remember what happened that night.
And they’ll do whatever it takes to stop the truth from being uncovered.

Edgar Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on 19th January 1809. His father abandoned his family the following year and within a year his mother had died leaving him an orphan.
He was taken in by the Allan family but never formally adopted although he now referred to himself as Edgar Allan Poe. His father alternatively spoiled or chastised him and tension was frequent over gambling debts and monies for his education. His university years to study ancient and modern languages was cut short by lack of money and he enlisted as a private in the army claiming he was 22, it is more probable he was 18. After 2 years he obtained a discharge in order to take up an appointment at the military academy, West Point, where he failed to become an officer.
Poe had released his 1st poetry volume in 1827 and after his 3rd turned to prose and placing short stories in several magazines and journals. At age 26 he obtained a licence to marry his cousin. She was a mere 13 but they stayed together until her death from tuberculosis 11 years after.
In January 1845 ‘The Raven’ was published and became an instant classic. Thereafter followed the prose works for which he is now so rightly famed as a master of the mysterious and the macabre.
Edgar Allan Poe died at the tragically early age of 40 on 7th October 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. Newspapers at the time reported Poe's death as ‘congestion of the brain’ or ‘cerebral inflammation’, common euphemisms for death from disreputable causes such as alcoholism but the actual cause of death remains a mystery.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE NED KELLY AWARD FOR BEST INTERNATIONAL CRIME FICTION

A compelling courtroom drama, Dice is an incredibly timely exploration of how sexual violence is viewed in our society.

Four teenage boys invent a sex game based on rolling dice and doing what the numbers say.

They are charged with multiple sexual offences against three teenage girls.

Twelve random jurors are brought together in a trial to work out what actually happened.

Only they can say whether crimes have been committed and who should be punished.

    How does the jury find?

Dice is a stunning courtroom drama told from the perspective of a diverse group of ordinary people – the jury. How will twelve women and men, aged from eighteen to seventy-two with hugely disparate backgrounds, beliefs and experience, decide whether consent was given or crimes were committed?

How can they possibly arrive at a unanimous verdict? How will justice be properly served?

In this dazzlingly accomplished and gripping debut novel, chapters are told through the point of view of each juror as the trial unfolds. The reader too becomes a jury member as the evidence is presented and information is withheld, fragmented and re-told by different witnesses. Each person must decide where the truth lies.

Will the verdict deliver justice, or just reflect the prejudices and differences in the jury?

'Dice has a forensic depth that is compelling, that challenges and deeply moves the reader. But what sets this novel apart is the precision and power of the writing. This is fiction that doesn't want to be journalism, it affirms the truth and nuance and possibility of imagination.' Christos Tsiolkas, author of The Slap

'Dice achieves what the best fiction achieves: it draws us into the story on a deeply personal level, coaxing us to consider what we would do in the same situation...the moving and powerful final moment delivers a sense of narrative completion while also reminding us of the flawed nature of the justice system.' Catherine Chidgey, award-winning author of Remote Sympathy

'An utterly compelling, nuanced and appropriately complex read that effortlessly depicts the unique combination of the sensational and the mundane, which often characterises the criminal trial.' Professor Vanessa Munro, Warwick University
