Beschreibung

"Gender Bias Exposed" presents a comprehensive examination of gender discrimination's persistent influence across global societies, backed by extensive empirical research spanning 30 countries. The book uniquely combines quantitative data with qualitative analysis to reveal how gender bias operates through interconnected systems of social, economic, and cultural practices, making it particularly valuable for both academics and practitioners in the field.

The work progresses through three major sections, beginning with a theoretical framework that draws from social psychology and anthropology to explain bias formation. The central portion presents compelling research findings, including documented workplace compensation disparities and leadership representation gaps, while the final section outlines evidence-based intervention strategies that have proven successful in various national contexts.

Notable findings are supported by longitudinal studies from major research institutions and corporate diversity reports, providing a solid foundation for understanding both obvious and subtle manifestations of gender discrimination. What sets this book apart is its interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from economics, psychology, and sociology to create a complete picture of gender bias in modern society.

Written in an accessible yet scholarly style, it serves multiple audiences, from policy makers to human resource professionals, offering practical applications while maintaining academic rigor. The book not only identifies problems but provides concrete solutions, featuring actionable recommendations for various stakeholder groups and frameworks for implementing effective change strategies.

The world is encountering multiple crises—climate, droughts, floods, energy, food, and pandemics, to name a few. We have a problem, this is the solution.

Capitalism and Crises is about how capitalism can fix them—how it can solve not cause them. The reason why it has caused them is that we have misconceived the nature of our capitalist system. We have failed to understand the key institution at the heart of it—business—and as a result we have allowed it to cause as well as solve problems. This book describes why this has happened and what needs to change to address it.

Drawing on history, philosophy, psychology, and biology as well economics, law, and finance, Mayer describes what has gone wrong, what needs to change, and how to fix it. He sets out the big challenges that capitalism must address and how it should set about doing that, and discusses how financial institutions should be at the heart of this, and how the public sector can work with the private on a common purpose of solving problems and creating shared prosperity. Capitalism and Crises provides an inspiring and motivational roadmap of how we as practitioners, policymakers, consumers, employees, communities, students, and citizens of the world can together tackle the challenges of the twenty-first century—to flourish and survive.

The first full biography of Catalina Micaela, infanta of Spain and duchess of Savoy Catalina Micaela was the younger daughter of Philip II and granddaughter of Catherine de Medici. Aged just seventeen, Catalina married Carlo I, duke of Savoy, and moved from the royal court in Madrid to Turin to begin a new life as a duchess. Overlooked by historians and little known today, Catalina was nonetheless a key figure in sixteenth-century Europe. A woman of intelligence, forceful personality, and strong feeling, she energetically and effectively governed her husband's dukedom during his long absences from Turin on military campaigns. In this widely researched account, Magdalena Sánchez traces Catalina's life from her childhood to her early death shortly after giving birth to her tenth child. Drawing on thousands of letters Catalina exchanged with her husband, Sánchez paints an intimate portrait of a young Spanish woman adapting to a new husband, a new land, and the demands of governance.

The Annals was Tacitus' final work, covering the period from the death of Augustus Caesar in the year 14. He wrote at least 16 books, but books 7-10 and parts of books 5, 6, 11 and 16 are missing. Book 6 ends with the death of Tiberius and books 7-12 presumably covered the reigns of Caligula and Claudius. The remaining books cover the reign of Nero, perhaps until his death in June 68 or until the end of that year, to connect with the Histories. The second half of book 16 is missing, ending with the events of the year 66. We do not know whether Tacitus completed the work or whether he finished the other works that he had planned to write; he died before he could complete his planned histories of Nerva and Trajan, and no record survives of the work on Augustus Caesar and the beginnings of the Empire with which he had planned to complete his work as an historian. More than a quarter of a million Americans crossed the continental United States between 1840 and 1870, going west in one of the greatest migrations of modern times. The frontiersmen have become an integral part of our history and folklore, but the Westering experiences of American women are equally central to an accurate picture of what life was like on the frontier.

Through the diaries, letters, and reminiscences of women who participated in this migration, Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey gives us primary source material on the lives of these women, who kept campfires burning with buffalo chips and dried weeds, gave birth to and cared for children along primitive and dangerous roads, drove teams of oxen, picked berries, milked cows, and cooked meals in the middle of a wilderness that was a far cry from the homes they had left back east. Still (and often under the disapproving eyes of their husbands) they found time to write brave letters home or to jot a few weary lines at night into the diaries that continue to enthrall us.

In her new foreword, Professor Mary Clearman Blew explores the enduring fascination with this subject among both historians and the general public, and places Schlissel's groundbreaking work into an intriguing historical and cultural context.
