A ghost is the soul or spirit of a departed individual or animal who can appear to the living in folklore. Ghosts are defined in numerous ways in folklore, varying from an unnoticeable presence to clear or hardly noticeable wispy shapes to reasonable, realistic forms. Mysticism, or a séance in spiritism, is the purposeful effort to get in touch with the spirit of a departed individual. Part, haunt, phantom, poltergeist, shade, specter, ghost, alarm, wraith, devil, and evil spirit are some of the other titles used to define it.
The belief in a hereafter, and symptoms of the spirits of the dead, is quite common, extending back to pre-literate civilizations' animism or forefather praise. Funeral events, exorcisms, and some forms of spiritualism and routine magic are all specifically created to put the spirits of the dead to rest. Though legends of ghostly armies and the ghosts of animals instead of people have been told, ghosts are usually depicted as lonesome, human-like essences. They are said to haunt particular spots, products, or people with whom they once had a relationship. According to a Seat Proving ground research from 2009, 18% of Americans declare to have seen a ghost.

Joan of Arc was born around January 6, 1412, in the small village of Domrémy, located in northeastern France. She came from a modest family of farmers, with her father, Jacques d’Arc, being a well-respected member of the community. Her mother, Isabelle Romée, was known for her devout religious beliefs, which would greatly influence Joan's early life. Joan was one of five children, and although she lived in relative poverty, her family provided her with a stable and loving environment.
Growing up in Domrémy, Joan was surrounded by the rural landscape of Lorraine, a region that was politically unstable at the time. The Hundred Years’ War, which pitted France against England, had caused widespread hardship for many French families. Domrémy, being on the border of French and Burgundian territories, was caught in the middle of this conflict. Joan witnessed firsthand the suffering of the French people, including raids and the destruction of villages, which left a lasting impact on her.
Joan was a deeply religious child, often spending time in the local church. It is said that she learned about the lives of saints and felt a special connection to them. Her strong faith became a central part of her identity. By the age of 13, Joan began to experience mystical visions. These visions, which she later described as coming from saints such as Saint Michael, Saint Catherine, and Saint Margaret, were significant in shaping her future. The voices instructed her to help the French crown, specifically to assist Charles VII, the Dauphin, in reclaiming his throne and driving out the English forces from France. Joan took these visions seriously, believing they were divine instructions, and they set her on a path that would change the course of history.

As an orphan in the slums of Tsu City, Japan, Kodo Sawaki had to fight his way to adulthood, and became one of the most respected Zen masters of the twentieth century. He had a great understanding of Dogen Zenji's teaching and he knew how to express Dogen's philosophy. Sawaki's primary mission was to bring all people to an awareness of the Self, which he believed came through Zen meditation. 
 
 
 
His humor and straightforward talk garnered Sawaki followers from all walks of life. Though he remained poor by choice, he was rich in spirit. Two of his students who became known in America as well as in Japan were Kosho Uchiyama, abbot of Antaiji Temple and author of Opening The Hand of Thought, and Gudo Nishijima, Zen teacher and translator of Dogen's Shobogenzo. 
 
 
 
A student of Kosho Uchiyama, Arthur Braverman has compiled an anthology of Sawaki's writings and a garland of sayings gathered from throughout his lifetime. One of a few collections of Sawaki's teachings published in English, his life and work bracket the most intriguing and influential period of modern Zen practice in Japan and America.
