Sinossi

In Defense of Socrates is a compelling anthology that brings together critical and reflective narratives on the enduring themes of philosophy, ethics, and the quest for truth. This collection navigates the vast landscape of classical and modern thought, exploring the timeless endeavors of understanding virtue, justice, and the role of the philosopher in society. With works ranging from dialogues encapsulating the essence of Socratic questioning to narratives of moral introspection, the anthology presents a diverse tapestry of styles—ranging from the incisive dialectic engagements of ancient Greece to the didactic tales of the 19th century. Each piece, especially the seminal portrayals of Socratic discourse, offers a unique spin on the philosophical inquiries that have shaped intellectual history. The contributing authors, including eminent figures such as Plato, Xenophon, and Samuel Griswold Goodrich, bring a wealth of perspective into this scholarly opus. Plato and Xenophon, as direct admirers and chroniclers of Socratic thought, embody the ancient intellectual heritage, while Goodrich offers a 19th-century angle that invites reflection on the historical evolution of these ideas. Together, they weave a narrative that intersects various cultural and historical movements, bridging classical and modern interpretations and enriching the reader's grasp of Socratic dialogue and its enduring legacy. For scholars and enthusiasts alike, In Defense of Socrates presents an invaluable opportunity to explore a mosaic of intellectual traditions. This anthology allows readers to navigate a wide range of perspectives, styles, and interpretations all within a single cohesive volume. Whether for its educational depth, the breadth of insights, or the vibrant dialogue it fosters, this collection is an essential journey into the heart of philosophical inquiry and its impact on ethical discourses throughout the ages.

Alfred Thayer Mahan is arguably the most influential military strategist in American history, and one of the world’s most important naval theorists. His work has been nearly as influential as the famous German military theorist Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), and the lesser-known but nearly as influential Swiss military writer Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779-1869).
Alfred decided to go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, which he was admitted to via the influence of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. He graduated in 1859 and started a career lasting almost 40 years. He served aboard a wide variety of ships, from a powerful frigate under sail to a variety of steam sloops, corvettes, and gunboats, many of which were side wheelers and all of which had auxiliary sails.
He started as a Midshipman and worked his way up the naval ranks to Captain and Commander. He also had several independent commands. He was stationed off the Atlantic Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico during the Union blockade of the Confederacy. He was on a sidewheeler tasked with keeping an eye on the French in Mexico, where Napoleon II had installed a Hapsburg archduke as emperor. He spent more than two years on station in the Far East, spent a couple of years with the South Atlantic Squadron based in Montevideo in Uruguay, and then a year off the west coast of South America, in a ship observing events during the War of the Pacific.
After a lengthy naval career, Mahan had assignments at the Naval Academy and the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He was invited to lecture at the Naval War College, and it was there that he collected together his notes and wrote a book, The Influence of Naval Power upon History, which somehow became an international bestseller in 1890. His book resulted in an invitation to dine with the Queen in Britain. It was translated into German and the Kaiser ordered a copy be placed on every German warship and in every school.

Cohen's subjects in A Place to Read can be as commonplace as golfing with close friends, amateur astronomy, birding, or learning to fly at the age of sixty. But he asks difficult questions about how we are grounded in space and time, how we are affected by our names, how a healthy person can turn into a hypochondriac, and how we might commune with the dead. And throughout he measures, compares and interprets his experiences through the lens of six decades of reading.

Read with style, compassion and musical interludes by Michael's son Dan.

In a world increasingly shaped by fear, division, and rising authoritarianism, Finding My Humanity is a timely memoir that invites us back to what connects us most—our mutual capacity for love, empathy, and courage- indeed our shared humanity. Ryan Ubuntu Olson's journey begins in rural Colorado, where he wrestles with his identity in a community that offers little space for difference. As a queer young man navigating isolation, discrimination, and heartbreak, he is forced to reckon with what it means to live authentically in the face of rejection. But what begins as a personal struggle evolves into something far greater. On a conservative Catholic college campus, Ryan Ubuntu unexpectedly becomes a public advocate, confronting bias and building community. That role propels him into global human rights work, where he supports activists and inclusive development efforts in countries like Kenya, Jamaica, Peru, Malawi, and Cambodia. From the grassroots to the halls of the United Nations, Ryan Ubuntu becomes a bridge between lived experience and global policy, shaping strategies for inclusion and dignity worldwide. More than a memoir, Finding My Humanity is a reflection on what it means to turn pain into purpose—and how one person’s story can spark collective action. With raw honesty and unwavering hope, Ryan Ubuntu explores how our personal "why" can become a driving "how" in the fight for justice, connection, and change. Narrated by the author himself, the audiobook seeks to add deeper meaning to the memoir by adding the human depth and conviction that can only be expressed in the tone and intonation of the person most impacted by the memoir's greatest meaning. Whether you're seeking purpose, healing, or inspiration, this is a book for anyone ready to lead with heart in a world hungry for hope.

Frederick Ignatius Cowles was born in 1900 in Cambridge, England.
This unfamiliar name is one of the gems of English supernatural fiction as well as several other works of travelogues, history, folklore, and children's books.
When his supernatural short stories, and some are very short indeed, were first published they were compared to the works of M R James and EF Benson, yet unlike those two authors he fell, unfairly, into obscurity.
In all he wrote perhaps 60 short stories with weird and supernatural themes.
Frederick Cowles died in 1948 although some accounts offer that it was 1949.

A collection of the year’s best mystery and suspense short fiction selected by New York Times bestselling author S. A. Cosby, author of Razorblade Tears, and series editor Steph Cha.
In his introduction, guest editor S. A. Cosby observes that writing short stories is “a special skill that combines brevity with wit and cleverness and the hint of the existential malaise that imbues crime fiction with its gravitas.” The stories in this col-lection overflow with gravitas in the most unexpected ways: a cryptic note left on a windshield, a murder for hire meets a game of Mouse Trap, a swipe right on a dating app goes horribly wrong. From an eleven-year-old drawn to the neighborhood spookhouse to a scholarship kid at an exclusive boarding school, a nefarious Old West gunman to a Florida woman’s struggle against both outer and inner demons, the characters in The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2024 are haunted and haunting, and wholly unforgettable.
The Best American Mystery and Suspense 2024 includes MEGAN ABBOTT • ALYSSA COLE • TANANARIVE DUE • ABBY GENI • JORDAN HARPER • GAR ANTHONY HAYWOOD •TONI LP KELNER • BOBBY MATHEWS • LISA UNGER • and others
