Sinossi

"Social Pressures" explores the hidden forces that shape our daily decisions, revealing that up to 70% of our choices are significantly influenced by external social factors. This comprehensive examination of human behavior delves into three fundamental pillars: peer dynamics, societal expectations, and cultural norms, drawing from extensive research across 40 countries and spanning five decades of social psychology and anthropology studies.

The book progresses through three distinct sections, beginning with the psychological mechanisms behind social influence, moving to cross-cultural analyses of social expectations, and concluding with practical frameworks for maintaining personal autonomy. What makes this work particularly valuable is its integration of traditional research with modern contexts, especially examining how digital connectivity and social media have transformed peer pressure in contemporary society.

Through MRI studies and research involving 5,000 participants, the book presents compelling evidence of how social pressure physically affects our decision-making processes. This accessible yet rigorous exploration combines insights from psychology, sociology, and neuroscience to demonstrate how social influences persist throughout adulthood, affecting everything from professional choices to personal relationships.

The book's unique approach balances academic research with practical applications, offering readers concrete strategies for recognizing and navigating social pressures while maintaining authenticity in an increasingly connected world. Whether examining workplace dynamics or cultural variations in social conformity, the book provides readers with tools to understand and consciously manage the social forces that shape their lives.

Leaders of the African liberation movements proclaimed ambitious objectives and promised swift dismantling of colonial policies and practices. It was believed that poverty and underdevelopment were consequences of the exploitative policies of the colonial masters, who had no interest in improving living conditions for local communities. Independence and freedom were anticipated to eradicate poverty, ignorance and disease, and the new leadership would accelerate economic development and prosperity.
However, after more than 50 years of independence, most African countries are still poor and underdeveloped and this poses a few questions:
Have African leaders abandoned their ambitions?
Are African challenges more complex than in other regions?
Has the political leadership failed to rise to the challenge?
In his relentless pursuit of African excellence and development, Professor Lumkile Wiseman Nkuhlu offers profound insights and solutions to the challenges Africa has faced and continues to encounter. He wrestles with the vexing question of how a continent with such a rich history and heritage, as well as potential, remains an underperforming region of the world and offers insights into potential pathways and strategies for breaking free from the vicious cycle of underdevelopment.
Africa can become the world's production powerhouse in the second half of this century, provided that intentional and purposeful leadership emerges. Purposeful Leadership for Africa in the 21st Century delves into the leadership strategies, qualities and policies needed for an African renewal, aiming to reposition the continent as a strategic and competitive global player.

Winston Churchill is remembered as one of history’s most formidable leaders, a man whose unwavering resolve and stirring oratory inspired a beleaguered nation to withstand its darkest hour. Rising to prominence during one of humanity’s most perilous times, Churchill’s leadership during World War II not only shaped the fate of Britain but left an indelible mark on the global landscape. His life and career encapsulate the qualities of resilience, vision, and adaptability that are crucial during moments of profound crisis.

Born into an aristocratic family in 1874, Churchill's early life was one of privilege, yet his path to greatness was anything but guaranteed. Despite academic struggles and initial failures, he demonstrated remarkable tenacity, carving out a career as a soldier, journalist, and eventually a politician. His varied experiences—whether charging on horseback in colonial campaigns or reporting from the frontlines—imbued him with a deep understanding of courage and strategy, traits that would serve him well in the years to come.

Churchill’s rise to the role of wartime Prime Minister was far from linear. By the late 1930s, his political career seemed to be in decline. His outspoken criticism of appeasement policies and his relentless warnings about Adolf Hitler’s ambitions rendered him an isolated figure, often dismissed as a relic of an earlier age. Yet, as Europe hurtled toward war, Churchill’s foresight and defiance became assets too valuable to ignore. In 1940, as Nazi Germany’s forces swept across the continent, Churchill was called upon to lead.

The most important war of all for Texas came in the early 19th century, and the common story heard in America is about rebellion against intolerance, oppression and Mexican cruelty. The Battle of the Alamo in particular, surrounded by legend and testimonies of heroism, is a textbook example of the fight for freedom, comparable to the Jewish defenders during the Roman siege at Masada. The words "martyrs" and "Mexican tyranny" are almost always present in the recounts, and “Remember the Alamo!” is both a slogan of self-glorification and martyrdom that remains one of the most famous phrases in America. 	Texas formally asked to be annexed by the United States in 1845. This annexation angered the Mexican government, which still considered Texas to be part of its territory. Mexico had previously warned that the annexation of Texas would cause Mexico to declare war on the United States.
When a Mexican patrol attacked American cavalry in the disputed area north of the Rio Grande, President Polk went to Congress for a declaration of war. The declaration passed on May 13, 1846. The war against Mexico was unpopular with the opposition Whig party, especially in the North. Opponents of the war denounced it as a war of aggression, and denied that there had been a valid reason for war.	Small American military units were quickly able to occupy key points in California, including San Francisco and Los Angeles. Although California was sparsely populated, some Mexican inhabitants formed an effective resistance which was eventually put down in 1847 by American reinforcements. Subsequently, a larger American army was sent to invade central Mexico, and managed to capture the Mexican capital, Mexico City, on September 13, 1847. News of the capital falling caused it to retreat to try to retake the capital. After the defeat of the last Mexican army, major hostilities ended.

    Against Technoableism -...

When Ashley Shew became a self-described "hard-of-hearing chemobrained amputee with Crohn's disease and tinnitus," there was no returning to "normal." Suddenly well-meaning people called her an "inspiration" while grocery shopping or viewed her as a needy recipient of technological wizardry. Most disabled people don't want what the abled assume they want—nor are they generally asked.

In vibrant prose, Shew shows how we can create better narratives and more accessible futures by drawing from the insights of the cross-disability community. To forge a more equitable world, Shew argues that we must eliminate "technoableism"—the harmful belief that technology is a "solution" for disability; that the disabled simply await being "fixed" by technological wizardry; that making society more accessible and equitable is somehow a lesser priority.

This badly needed introduction to disability expertise considers mobility devices, medical infrastructure, neurodivergence, and the relationship between disability and race. The future, Shew points out, is surely disabled—whether through changing climate, new diseases, or even through space travel. It's time we looked closely at how we all think about disability technologies and learn to envision disabilities not as liabilities, but as skill sets enabling all of us to navigate a challenging world.
