Sinossi

Music Mood Boost: How Sound Shapes Our Emotions reveals the science behind music’s profound impact on our minds, blending neuroscience and psychology to show how melodies and rhythms shape emotions. The book’s central theme positions music as a neurobiological tool capable of boosting mental well-being through measurable changes in brain chemistry. It demystifies why certain songs trigger joy or nostalgia, linking these reactions to dopamine pathways and neural plasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire itself through experience.

Structured in three clear sections, the book first explores how music activates reward centers like the nucleus accumbens, with studies showing pleasurable tracks release dopamine akin to eating chocolate. It then dives into why preferences vary, tying emotional responses to personal memories and cultural influences. The final chapters offer practical strategies, like crafting mood-specific playlists or using rhythmic patterns to ease anxiety. Unique insights include analysis of “musical chills”—physical shivers that reveal peak emotional engagement—and music’s role in stroke recovery by rebuilding neural connections.

Balancing rigorous research with relatable examples, Music Mood Boost stands out for making complex concepts accessible. It bridges lab findings to daily life, featuring exercises for tracking music’s effects on stress or resilience. By framing music as both art and science, the book empowers readers to harness sound intentionally, transforming passive listening into active emotional self-care.

Today the Mesopotamians and their religion are sources of curiosity, but thousands of years ago, the religions were integral parts of their lives. From their birth to their death, deities surrounded them, and whether their social interactions were on the level of a smaller city or that of a larger nation-state, deities played key roles in the social fabric of their society. Whereas the Israelites were one people who worshipped a single god, Mesopotamian religions hailed from many sources that spanned thousands of years.
Myth content and structure also changed as different dynasties came and went from Babylon. When modern Assyriologists – the term for scholars who study ancient Mesopotamia – began compiling the myths of the region, they realized that many of the most popular myths had several versions and were often copied into multiple languages. Although myths are part of a culture’s religion, Mesopotamian people’s religious rituals were usually independent of any myth: rituals were a way for humans to connect and gain favor with their gods, while the myths explained the way things came to be, as well as elucidating moral elements of society.
In ancient Mesopotamia, families formed the basis of local communities, and from that core, states, kingdoms, and empires often derived their identity and legitimacy. Of course, the family unit also played a crucial role in the development of religious beliefs and myths, and one of the most influential is the Anunnaki. Scores of religious texts from ancient Mesopotamia – written in Sumerian cuneiform and Akkadian cuneiform – relate how the Anunnaki were the second generation of gods and goddesses. However, scholars debate their abilities, roles, and even which deities were considered among the Anunnaki. Many texts describe the Anunnaki collectively as guardians of the Underworld, yet in other texts, they are mentioned as protectors of the heavens.

"This whip-smart collection is a playful celebration of feminine power.”
    —Publisher’s Weekly
"Goddam funny ... a clinic in irony. What a beautiful book.”
    —Ross Gay
"With the verve of Alice Fulton and the panache of Gerald Stern, Sysko keens into the canon, a welcome voice. Sing, indeed, heavenly muse.”
    —Alan Michael Parker
"With electric nerve, L.J. Sysko's savvy and often comic poems careen through American pop culture and the suburban world that infantalizes and traps women. Sysko fixes her gaze on adolescent girls and their trajectory into selfhood—a path that takes them through sexual shame and erasure, and then, as they age, into defiance."

    Selected by Patricia Smith
The Daughter of Man follows its unorthodox heroine as she transforms from maiden to warrior—then to queen, maven, and crone—against the backdrop of suburban America from the 1980s to today. In this bold reframing of the hero’s journey, L. J. Sysko serves up biting social commentary and humorous, unsparing self-critique while enlisting an eccentric cast that includes Betsy Ross as sex worker, Dolly Parton as raptor, and a bemused MILF who exchanges glances with a young man at a gas station. Sysko’s revisions of René Magritte’s modernist icon The Son of Man and the paintings of baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi, whose extraordinary talent was nearly eclipsed after she took her rapist to trial, loom large in this multifaceted portrait of womanhood. With uncommon force, The Daughter of Man confronts misogyny and violence, even as it bursts with nostalgia, lust, and poignant humor.

All In: How we build a country...

‘A persuasive manifesto for a better Britain.’ Observer Book of the Day
Britain needs a fresh start. This timely book by one of the stars of the new government shows how to achieve it.
In this brilliant and accessible intervention, Lisa Nandy reveals how Britain can leave behind the mess in which we find ourselves. All In charts a course towards a fairer, more equal, more prosperous country by drawing on the greatest asset we have – each other.
Rapid global changes, political division and economic crisis have left Britain reeling. For decades, large swathes of the country have been shut out, condemned to low productivity, underinvestment and managed decline, and stripped of their voice. With most major cities now beset with high housing costs, air pollution and congestion, even the ‘winners’ are losing.
All In shows how, by handing power and resources to people with a stake in the outcome, Britain can draw on the talent, assets and potential in every part of the country and start firing on all cylinders again. Finding strength rather than fear in our differences, it reimagines the relationship between people and government so that all of us can play our part in meeting the challenges of our age and rebuilding Britain the only way that works – together.
Lucid, clear-eyed and hopeful, this book sets out how we restore values, energy and direction to our politics and offers a glimpse of the alternative future that remains within our grasp.
Nandy's autobiography is a personal exploration of the process of political change, offering a best case scenario for a united, prosperous Britain. Drawing on history and economics, she presents a compelling vision for the 21st century.
