Sinossi

"Kitten Bonding Signals" offers a groundbreaking exploration of how cats communicate with humans and how understanding these signals can transform our relationships with our feline companions. Drawing from three decades of veterinary research and behavioral studies, this comprehensive guide delves into the sophisticated communication systems that cats have developed during their 9,000-year history of domestication, revealing how these behaviors continue to evolve in modern home environments.

The book presents its findings in three distinct sections, beginning with the biological foundations of feline communication, including detailed analyses of facial expressions, body language, and vocalizations. Through a combination of brain imaging studies and observational research, readers learn how cats process and respond to human interaction, while gaining practical insights into interpreting their pets' subtle social cues. The final section translates this scientific knowledge into actionable strategies for reducing stress and improving the human-cat bond.

What sets this book apart is its unique blend of rigorous scientific research and practical application, making complex behavioral concepts accessible to both professionals and general readers. Through detailed photographic guides, case studies, and evidence-based protocols, it bridges the gap between veterinary science and everyday pet care. Whether you're a veterinary professional or a devoted cat owner, this resource provides valuable insights into understanding and responding to feline social signals, ultimately leading to stronger, more meaningful relationships with our feline companions.

By the time the Pleistocene Epoch ended around 12,000 years ago, Homo sapiens had become one of the most significant species on the planet. It was also near the end of that period of time that modern humans began to gradually populate what would become Europe, Asia, and the Americas, eventually becoming the inheritors of the Paleolithic era and the only human species to make it into the Neolithic era. The process was long and difficult, and the survival of the species only happened through a combination of human tenacity and a fair amount of luck. As much as humans evolved during the Pleistocene, the topography, geography, and environment changed even more.
The cold Pleistocene temperatures lowered water levels across the planet, exposing land that was not there before or after the period. At the same time, significant regions of the planet were very different during the Pleistocene, including Southeast Asia, particularly the modern islands of Bali, Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, roughly equivalent to parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. This region, which modern scholars refer to as Sunda or Sundaland, was unique because all of it was connected by land, meaning today’s islands were once part of a contiguous subcontinent, and in terms of the people, flora, and fauna, it was very different than it is today. If a modern traveler could somehow transport back to the Pleistocene, Sundaland would look nothing like modern Southeast Asia and would resemble as much of a lost world as something out of a science fiction novel.
Although much is still unknown about Sundaland, researchers have uncovered plenty of evidence bringing this lost world to life. As anthropologists and archaeologists developed new models and discovered ancient material culture, they learned that Sundaland played a significant role in the development of Neolithic Southeast Asia in many ways.

The Examined Run - Why Good...

Can running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner?

In The Examined Run, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina B. Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics—virtue, vice, exemplarism, moral emotions, and competition—and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative—doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like "no pain, no gain." She argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating—rather, they perform feats of perseverance and courage, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training, coaching, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected.
