Sinossi

"Happy Dog Science" explores the fascinating 15,000-year evolutionary partnership between humans and dogs, delving deep into the scientific foundations of this unique relationship. Through a comprehensive examination of neuroscience, behavioral studies, and genetic research, the book unveils the complex mechanisms behind canine loyalty, breed-specific behaviors, and the profound impact dogs have on human health.

The book's journey begins with an exploration of the neurobiological basis of dog-human bonds, highlighting the crucial role of oxytocin in strengthening these relationships. Moving through carefully structured chapters, readers discover how selective breeding has shaped both physical and cognitive traits in different dog breeds, while dispelling common misconceptions about breed-determined behavior. The investigation culminates in revealing the measurable benefits of dog ownership, from reduced stress levels to improved cardiovascular health.

What sets this work apart is its systematic approach to presenting complex scientific concepts in accessible language, drawing from worldwide research including longitudinal studies and controlled experiments. The book bridges multiple disciplines while maintaining practical relevance for both dog owners and animal behavior professionals. By combining cutting-edge research from veterinary medicine, evolutionary biology, and behavioral psychology, it provides readers with evidence-based insights they can apply to strengthen their bonds with their canine companions.

    Global Disasters - The...

The world is increasingly vulnerable to a wide array of disasters, both natural and man-made, that threaten our lives, economies, and ecosystems. These crises, which range from catastrophic earthquakes to the far-reaching impacts of climate change, have become more frequent, intense, and interconnected. While the planet has always been subject to the forces of nature, human activity has amplified many of these events, while also introducing new, unprecedented risks. Natural disasters, like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods, have become an inevitable part of the global landscape, but they are now exacerbated by the ongoing environmental degradation we’ve caused. Likewise, man-made calamities, from industrial accidents to nuclear disasters, have demonstrated how human innovation can have disastrous consequences when not properly managed.

The interwoven nature of these crises has led to a compounded sense of urgency. Events like pandemics, which have a devastating impact on public health, can be worsened by the social and economic disarray that follows a natural or political disaster. The global interconnectivity in the age of globalization means that no disaster remains confined to one region; effects ripple across borders, affecting distant countries and societies. With climate change creating new uncertainties, the boundaries between natural and man-made disasters are becoming increasingly blurred. Rising temperatures contribute to more severe weather events, droughts, and wildfires, while deforestation, industrial pollution, and resource depletion are accelerating these destructive trends.

Sharks are some of the most fascinating and ecologically important, yet most threatened and misunderstood animals on Earth. More often feared than revered, their role as predators of the deep has earned them a reputation as a major threat to humans. But the truth is that sharks are not a danger to us—they’re in danger from us.

In Why Sharks Matter, marine conservation biologist Dr. David Shiffman urges us to overcome our misconceptions and embrace sharks as the imperiled and elegant ocean guardians they really are. Touching on everything from Shark Week to shark fin soup, overfishing to marine sanctuaries, Shiffman reveals why sharks are in trouble, why we should care, and how we can save them.

A witty narrative highlighting the author’s fascinating experiences working with sharks, this exploration of the essential principles of shark conservation science and policy is full of amazing facts about both little-known and iconic shark species. It spells out how healthy shark populations support marine ecosystems—and the coastal economies that depend on them—while carefully explaining what scientists, conservationists, and readers can do to help. With his signature pragmatism and irreverence, Shiffman doesn’t shy away from explaining why much of what you’ve heard about sharks and how to save them is wrong.

Perfect for shark enthusiasts, Why Sharks Matter provides an approachable, informative guide to the world of shark conservation, and an insider’s introduction to the passionate, brilliant people who work to protect our oceans. This fun read will have you looking at sharks with a fresh perspective and an understanding that their survival is crucial to the survival of another apex predator—ourselves.

Entomology - The World of Insects

Insects are among the most diverse and ecologically significant organisms on Earth, playing essential roles in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. As the largest group of living creatures, with millions of species identified and many more yet to be discovered, insects contribute to biodiversity, food webs, and ecosystem stability in ways that are often overlooked. Their presence and activities influence plant life, soil health, and the survival of countless other species, making them indispensable to natural processes.
One of the most crucial roles insects play is pollination. Many flowering plants, including a significant portion of the world’s crops, depend on insects such as bees, butterflies, and beetles to transfer pollen between flowers, enabling reproduction. Without insect pollinators, ecosystems would struggle to sustain plant diversity, and agricultural yields would decline drastically, threatening food supplies for both humans and wildlife. The economic and ecological value of insect pollination is immeasurable, reinforcing the importance of conserving pollinator populations.
In addition to pollination, insects are fundamental to decomposition and nutrient cycling. Species such as dung beetles, termites, and various flies break down organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil and promoting healthy plant growth. This process not only recycles essential elements but also prevents the accumulation of decaying material, contributing to ecosystem cleanliness and balance. By decomposing dead plants and animals, insects help maintain the natural cycle of life, supporting plant regeneration and sustaining the broader environment.
