  Willpower and grit may improve achievement for Black people in school, but they don’t secure our belonging. In fact, the very structure of higher education ensures that we’re treated as guests, outsiders to the institutional family—outnumbered and unwelcome. 
   
  In this compelling exploration of what it means to be a Black woman pursuing higher education, Dr. Jasmine L. Harris moves beyond the “data points” to examine the day-to-day impacts of racism in education on Black women as individuals, the longer-term consequences to our personal and professional lives, and the generational costs to our entire families. 
   
  “I want to arm as many Black girls and women as I can with the knowledge about these spaces that I lacked,” says Dr. Harris. “By laying bare my own traumas, and those of Black women before me, I am providing them the tools to protect themselves, with an understanding of how deliberately many institutions will try to undercut them.” 
   
  Trial and error have been required of Black students to navigate systems of discrimination and disadvantage. But this book now offers useful support, illuminating the community of Black women dealing with similar issues. The author’s story is not unusual, nor are her interactions anomalies.   Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, known by his revolutionary name Lenin, was a pivotal figure in Russian history and a key architect of the Soviet Union. Born on April 22, 1870, in Simbirsk, Russia, Lenin came from an upper-middle-class family. His life and legacy are closely intertwined with the establishment of the first socialist state in the modern world. From 1917 until his death in 1924, Lenin served as the head of government of Soviet Russia, and later the Soviet Union, where he oversaw the transformation of the country into a one-party socialist state ruled by the Communist Party. 
  Lenin’s path to power was shaped by both personal tragedy and intellectual transformation. The execution of his older brother, Alexander, in 1887 for attempting to assassinate Tsar Alexander III profoundly impacted Lenin, pushing him toward revolutionary socialist ideas. In his youth, Lenin showed promise as a student but was expelled from Kazan Imperial University for his involvement in anti-Tsarist protests. He subsequently pursued a legal degree, which laid the groundwork for his later work as a political theorist. By 1893, he had moved to Saint Petersburg, where he became deeply involved in Marxist activism, organizing workers and intellectuals against the oppressive Tsarist regime.

  In his acceptance speech, Reagan envisioned “a new consensus with all those across the land who share a community of values embodied in these words: family, work, neighborhood, peace and freedom.” Reagan’s acceptance focuses on “three grave threats to our very existence, any one of which could destroy us. We face a disintegrating economy, a weakened defense and an energy policy based on the sharing of scarcity.” 
  Reagan places responsibility on the “Democratic party leadership-in the White House and in Congress-for this unprecedented calamity which has befallen us.” He says his first act will be “to impose an immediate and thorough freeze on federal hiring” and “to conduct a detailed review of every department, bureau and agency that lives by federal appropriation.” Reagan calls for “a 30 percent reduction in income tax rates over a period of three years” and reminds us that “every major tax cut in this century has strengthened the economy, generated renewed productivity and ended up yielding new revenues for the government”. 
  On the issue of national defense, Reagan asserts that we “know only too well that war comes not when the forces of freedom are strong, but when they are weak. It is then that tyrants are tempted.” While calling for a strong military, Reagan reiterates his long-held belief that government is too big and the “time is now to limit federal spending; to insist on a stable monetary reform and to free ourselves from imported oil.”
