Not many 'amateur' yacht designers would dare to enter the first boat they had ever designed into the epic offshore Fastnet Race, let alone with the intention of winning it. But that is what Dick Carter did in 1964, beating all 151 other yachts, some sailed by the most notable sailors of the day. He repeated the feat 4 years later with another of his own designs (which also won the Admiral's Cup that year as top boat and top team), but by then he could certainly not be described as an 'amateur' yacht designer. His radical innovations created fast and comfortable boats which were much in demand in this, the golden age of offshore racing. They were commissioned by the top sailors and succeeded in winning the Admiral's Cup, Southern Cross Series, One Ton Cup, Two Ton Cup and many of the biggest races. He even went on to design the massive 128-foot Vendredi Treize for Jean-Yves Terlain to sail single-handed in the 1972 OSTAR (trans-Atlantic) race – the longest boat ever to have been raced single-handed. But after just a decade at the top of his game, he quit the world of sailing and moved on to other challenges. He hadn't been heard of for so long that sailors assumed he was dead. His surprise appearance at the funeral of Ted Hood gave rise to the suggestion that he wrote this book. It is beautifully produced with many fabulous photographs and boat plans and was first published in the US by Seapoint Books and is now published in the UK by Fernhurst Books. While his career as a yacht designer may have been brief, the impact of his innovations has lasted the test of time. Who today would think of an offshore yacht without internal halyards in the mast or that the rudder always had to be fixed to the keel? These concepts, and many more, were first introduced by Dick Carter.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
In 2023, the Pacific Crest Trail was swallowed by the deepest snowpack in history. Most hikers waited for a better year. Riley laced his boots, hoisted his pack, and walked north. Snowbound is the story of one hiker’s path through 2,650 miles of relentless winter and the even harder terrain within. Battling exhaustion, river crossings, and weeks of silence, Riley confronted not just the weight of snow—but the weight of his past. Each step north was a letting go: of the version of himself shaped by fear, shame, and stories he no longer wanted to believe. From a near fall on Mt. Baden-Powell to the haunting stillness of Forester Pass, from the agony of loneliness to the quiet beauty of Leavenworth, this is a story of reckoning, resolve, and rising again. It’s not just a trail memoir. It’s a story about coming home to yourself—in the most unforgiving year on record.

In this deeply personal and profoundly hopeful memoir, Dr. Clarisse Djeumo Djukom invites listeners into her intimate journey of living with bipolar disorder as a Christian woman. With raw honesty and unwavering faith, she chronicles her path from the subtle early warning signs—dismissed as stress or fatigue—through the devastating extremes of manic highs and crushing depressive lows, to finding stability, purpose, and peace.
More than just a story of survival, this book is a comprehensive guide for anyone touched by bipolar disorder. Dr. Djukom weaves together her lived experiences with practical strategies for managing the illness, including navigating medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. She tackles often-overlooked challenges like the financial burden of treatment, the importance of building a strong support network, and the courage required to break through stigma and shame.
At the heart of this narrative is the author's Christian faith—an anchor that provides strength, hope, and meaning amidst suffering. Through prayer, scripture, and spiritual reflection, she demonstrates how faith can be integrated with medical treatment to create a holistic approach to healing.
Whether you're living with bipolar disorder, supporting a loved one, or seeking to understand this complex condition, this audiobook offers validation, practical wisdom, and a powerful message: recovery is possible, small victories matter, and you are not alone. Dr. Djukom's journey reminds us that our struggles do not define us—they can become the foundation for resilience, self-compassion, and a life filled with purpose.

I know of no gamekeepers who are not countrymen to their fingertips. They observe, they consider, they cherish and they do more than most to look after out woodlands and hedgerows, our moorlands and fens. Theirs is not an easy job, out in all weathers and misunderstood by many townies who are further removed from the countryside and its workings than they have ever been, thanks to increasing technology which keeps them housebound. They need never go out if they so choose, remaining glued to the screen of a mobile phone, a computer or a television. But those who do realise that the intervention of man need not always be irresponsible and thoughtless can see just what benefits can accrue from the wise management of our natural resources, and Jeremy Hobson does much in this book to apprise us all of the modern approach to keepering, from raising birds and habitat management to choosing coats and boots and training dogs. It is all here, and a fascinating read it is; both for those in the know and those who are curious to learn all about it.

Strata - Stories from Deep Time

The epic stories of our planet's 4.54-billion-year history are written in strata―ages-old remnants of ancient seafloors, desert dunes, and riverbeds striping landscapes around the world. In this brilliantly original debut work, science writer Laura Poppick decodes strata to lead us on a journey through four global transformations that made our lives on Earth possible: the first accumulations of oxygen in the atmosphere; the deep freezes of "Snowball Earth"; the rise of mud on land and accompanying proliferation of plants; and the dinosaurs' reign on a hothouse planet
Poppick introduces us to the researchers who have devoted their careers to understanding the events of deep time. She travels to sites as various as a Minnesotan iron mine that runs half a mile deep and a corner of the Australian Outback where glacial deposits date from the coldest times on Earth. Ultimately, she demonstrates that the planet's oceans, continents, atmosphere, life, and ice have always conspired to bring stability to Earth, even if we are only just beginning to understand how these different facets interact.
A work in the tradition of John McPhee, Strata allows us to observe how the planet has responded to past periods of environmental upheaval, and shows how Earth's ancient narratives could hold lessons for our present and future.
