    Icelight, Ranjit Hoskote's eighth collection of poems, enacts the experience of standing at the edge—of a life, a landscape, a world assuming new contours or going up in flames. Yet, the protagonists of these poems also stand at the edge of epiphany. In the title poem, we meet the Neolithic cave-dweller who, dazzled by a shapeshifting nature, crafts the first icon. The 'I' of these poems is not a sovereign 'I'. A questing, questioning voice, it locates itself in the web of life, in relation to the cosmos. In 'Tacet', the speaker asks: "What if I had/ no skin/ Of what/ am I the barometer?" Long committed to the Japanese mono no aware aesthetic, Hoskote embraces talismans, premonitions, fossils: active residues from the previous lives of people and places. Icelight is a book about transitions and departures, eloquent in its acceptance of transience in the face of mortality. In 2023, Nine Arches Press launched their nationwide Primers scheme for a seventh time, in search of exciting new voices in poetry, with Katie Hale as selecting editor. After reading through hundreds of anonymous entries, and narrowing down the choices from longlist to shortlist, three poets emerged as clear choices: Jade Cuttle, Antonia Taylor and Laura Varnam.
    Primers Volume Seven now brings together a showcase from three distinctive poets, exploring everything from mudlarking and making a 'mossary', to the borderlands of conflicts and a bold retelling of an Old English epic. Through lively engagement with language, deep connection to place and time, and the unearthing the stories of myth, history and peoples, these revealing poems offer an insightful collection of new work from some of poetry's most talented emerging voices.

    'I didn't expect it so soon, that's all. It made it seem so final, all our lives, those decisions all irreversible, immortalised in a slideshow to a Coldplay track.'
    Helen is forty when she loses her husband. Her daughter Becca is fifteen when her dad dies. Now it's just the two of them... what do they do next?
    Unfolding through snapshots of a relationship over forty years, Helen explores the threads which bind mother and daughter together, how they damage each other, and how they come to each other's rescue.
    A play for two actors – about love, grief, and getting ashes stuck to your trouser leg – Helen by Maureen Lennon was shortlisted for the 2020 Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. It was first produced at Theatre503, London, in 2023, in a co-production with Terrain, a company dedicated to promoting Northern artists and the stories they tell.

    Dante Alighieri's*Inferno*, here titled *Hell*, is the first canticle of his great narrative poem *Commedìa* (1314-1321), considered by many to be the foundation of modern vernacular literature, which consigned to the past the literary use of Latin. Dante's visionary description of the afterlife and the profound humanity of his characters have been admired by many generations of readers and writers, and the beauty of its verse has never been surpassed. The translation presented here is by Leon Stephens, who is also the reader.

    "Be thou the well by which I lie and rest;

    Be thou my tree of life, my garden ground;

    Be thou my home, my fire, my chamber blest,

    My book of wisdom, loved of all the best;

    Oh, be my friend, each day still newer found,

    As the eternal days and nights go round!

    Nay, nay—thou art my God, in whom all loves are bound!"
    In 1880, the prolific author George MacDonald self-published a long poem in book form as a gift for his friends. He called it, in full, A Book of Strife in the Form of the Diary of an Old Soul. It contained a new seven-line stanza for each day of the calendar year, written as prayers expressing MacDonald's longings, struggles, and joys in everyday life.
    The Diary was originally printed with a blank page facing every page of poetry so that readers could supplement MacDonald's diary with their own. This feature in particular, along with the spiritual wisdom and literary artistry of the text itself, was beloved by C. S. Lewis, who gave a copy of the book to his future wife, Joy Davidman, as a Christmas gift in 1952.
    Now in this deluxe edition, MacDonald's classic devotional resource is again available with the blank pages he envisioned alongside the complete text. With a new introduction and explanatory notes by historian Timothy Larsen, the beloved writer's prayers find new life for enthusiasts and first-time readers alike.

    - Complete text of MacDonald's classic work—one poem for each day of the year
    - Thoughtful layout with a blank page for journaling opposite each poem
    - Introduction and annotations by historian Timothy Larsen
    - Deluxe features including cloth binding and bookmark ribbon

    Shunrō Oshikawa (1876-1914) was one the two most important founders of Japanese science fiction (the other being Unno Juza, 1897-1949). This story is a charming tribute to all those engaged in historical research. A young Portuguese child discovers an empty beer bottle on a beach. Her father, a well known scientist, discovers a message inside that may solve one of the greatest mysteries in the West African chronicles.
    This is a radio version, and not a translation. It has been adapted for historyradio.org by Michael Henrik Wynn, and he also plays the part of the traveler.
