‘I would get out of the car at every shopping centre and want to ask the stranger walking by with their trolley: “Why are you still shopping? Someone I love has died.”’ – Dela Gwala
Death is a fact of life, but the experience of grief is unique to each of us. This timely collection brings together a range of voices to offer reflections on death and dying, from individual losses to large scale catastrophes.
Karin Schimke revisits her troubled relationship with her late father, a Second World War survivor ‘whose brain had been broken by violence’. Madeleine Fullard, the head of South Africa’s Missing Persons Task Team, draws us into the search for activists who were ‘disappeared’ or went missing in political circumstances between 1960 and 1994. Caine Prize winner Lidudumalingani remembers his childhood in a small village in the Eastern Cape, and how his mother always listened to death notices read over the radio as a way of bearing witness to the grief of strangers.
The other contributors in this poignant and thought-provoking anthology turn their minds to subjects as varied as the ritual of washing the body of the deceased before burial, the ethics of killing small animals, and the extinction of humankind.
In a time of relentless grief, Our Ghosts Were Once People reminds us that one of the small consolations of literature is that all sorrows can be borne.

The author of Detroit 67 captures Northern England’s underground music scene of the 1970s and ‘80s in this candid memoir of late nights and heavy beats.Young Soul Rebel is a compelling and intimate story of northern soul, Britain's most fascinating musical underground scene. Author Stuart Cosgrove takes the reader on a personal journey through the iconic clubs that made it famous, like The Twisted Wheel, The Torch, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca and Cleethorpes Pier. He also details the bootleggers that made it infamous, the splits that threatened to divide the scene, the great unknown records that built its global reputation and the crate-digging collectors that travelled to America to unearth unknown sounds. A sweeping memoir that covers fifty years of British life, Young Soul Rebel places the northern soul scene in a larger social and historical context that includes the rise of amphetamine culture, the policing of youth culture, the north-south divide, the decline of coastal Britain, the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry, the rise of Thatcherism, the miners' strike, the rave scene and music in the era of the world wide web.

Six years later Paine published this "story of a man who made the world laugh and love him".For those who have read or listened to Mark Twain's works, Paine's work is an invaluable resource to better understand Twain, the stories behind his stories and his life with those he loved and with whom he worked. The Bible Study Source series provides a unique audio learning experience. Unlike a traditional audiobook's direct narration of a book's text, God the Creator includes high-quality, live audio sessions from the author that cover this important Bible-based topic. These sessions will reflect the ambiance of the unique recording locations, immersing the listener into the teaching.
Heaven and earth are woven more closely together than we might think. In this 8-session video Bible study, enter the creation of the world and the first movements of God's perfect plan to deliver his people.
Throughout the Bible—from its very first pages to the culmination of Christ's return—there are two parallel dramas unfolding:The lower story, which describes the events from our human perspective. The upper story, which reveals how the events unfold from God's perspective.
The objective of God the Creator—the first in a series of three small-group studies in The Story series—is to introduce you to these lower and upper stories as told in the Old Testament books of Genesis through Ruth. As you read these narratives—featuring characters such as Adam, Eve, Abraham, Sarah, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Gideon, and Ruth—you will see how God has been weaving our lower story into the greater upper story that he has been writing.
This all-new audio study, adapted from content featured in The Story church-wide campaign, will introduce group members to the Upper Story and Lower Story as revealed in the books of Genesis through Ruth. The curriculum also includes an updated study guide with new content and questions adapted from The Story Study Guide, The Heart of the Story, and Exploring the Story by Randy Frazee.
