Sinossi

William Paton Ker (1855-1923) was a Scottish literary scholar and essayist. An absolute master in the comparative study of literature, he was among the most erudite critics of his time: no branch of literary activity and almost no European literature remained alien to him. He was an active member of the Dante Society of Oxford and played a leading part in the development of the University College of London.During his life Ker wote many essays. Among his most important works it is necessary to mention: Epic and Romance (1897), The Dark Ages (1904), Essays on Medieval Literature (1905), The Art of Poetry (1923), Collected Essays (post., 1925), Form and Style in Poetry (post., 1928).On March 2, 1910 William Paton Ker gave at the Queen’s College in London a masterful lecture on the great British poet and playwright Robert Browning (1812-1889), whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. Today we propose the text of that lesson to modern readers.

A profound meditation on memory and the preservation of Palestinian heritage, from the award-winning author of We Could Have Been Friends, My Father and I.

Forgotten uncovers the hidden or neglected memorials and places in historic Palestine—now Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories—and what they might tell us about the land and the people who live on the small slip of earth between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River.

From ancient city ruins to the Nabi 'Ukkasha mosque and tomb, acclaimed writers and researchers Raja Shehadeh and Penny Johnson ask: what has been memorialized, and what lies unseen, abandoned, or erased—and why? Whether standing on a high cliff overlooking Lebanon or at the lowest land-based elevation on earth at the Dead Sea, they explore lost connections in a fragmented land.

In elegiac, elegant prose, Shehadeh and Johnson grapple not only with questions of Israeli resistance to acknowledging the Nakba—the 1948 catastrophe for Palestinians—but also with the complicated history of Palestinian commemoration today.

Linear and progressive views of history have dominated the popular imagination for the past seventy years in a worldview wedded to the inexorable rise of globalisation and GDP-growth at any cost. However, the end of the Cold War failed to produce the end of history as hoped, a fact brought home to many by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Material wealth and 'Progress' in the name of 'social justice' have not made people happier or more united but quite the opposite. Anxiety, depression, fearfulness, sadness, loneliness and anger have all massively increased since 1970 with the male suicide rate at an all-time high. Western society seems to be divided against itself across every line conceivable: left versus right, women versus men, 'non-whites' versus 'whites', globalists versus populists, 'the elites' versus 'the people', people who think that men can be women and vice versa versus those who insist that they cannot, and so on. Seventy-three percent of Americans believe their country is on 'the wrong track', with similar views reflected in Britain and across Europe. The Prophets of Doom explores eleven thinkers who not only dared to contradict the dominant linear and progressive view of history, but also predicted many of the political and social maladies through which we are living.

Be encouraged! You're already "doing it right" just by doing it.· a must-have resource for parents who homeschool or who want to start· from the founder of the 1000 Hours Outside Movement· equips parents with the confidence and tools they need to give their children the education they dream of and deserveDuring the past five years, homeschooling rates have been on the rise and show no signs of slowing. But many parents lack confidence, questioning whether they are doing it right (or whether they should take the plunge at all). With so many voices offering conflicting advice, it's hard to know where to start and where to go from there.A homeschooling mother of five and founder of 1000 Hours Outside, Ginny Yurich draws from her years of experience and research, as well as her master's degree in education from the University of Michigan, to encourage and equip parents who want to give homeschooling a try or want to improve their experience.Starting from the standpoint of "you're doing it right" instead of "you're doing it wrong," Ginny helps parents understand that just by choosing to homeschool they are· learning through living· allowing for individual timelines· leaving space for boredom· providing multiage experiences· teaching self-reliance· offering freedom· slowing down· and moreIf you've been on the fence about homeschooling or wondering if you're doing it all wrong, let Ginny encourage you in all you've already accomplished and equip you for even greater things ahead.
