Sinossi

"Riddle Evolution" explores the fascinating history of riddles, revealing them not just as simple amusements but as vital tools in the development of human intellect and cultural knowledge. This book argues that riddles mirror the evolution of human thought, reflecting increased sophistication in logic, language, and abstract reasoning across millennia. Intriguingly, riddles in ancient civilizations like Egypt and Greece served purposes beyond entertainment, including religious instruction and political maneuvering. The book uniquely bridges history and philosophy, positioning riddles as significant cultural artifacts that illuminate the journey of human intellect.

The book progresses by first introducing the fundamental characteristics of riddles in ancient literature. It then delves into key historical periods such as the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to show how riddles evolved with changing social and intellectual landscapes. Later chapters examine the transition of riddles into modern logic puzzles and their role in fields like artificial intelligence and cognitive therapy. This approach provides a comprehensive overview of how these brain teasers have shaped cognitive development and problem-solving abilities.

This book contains the following titles:
Japanese Mythology - Japanese mythology is a rich tapestry woven from the threads of ancient stories, religious beliefs, and cultural practices that have evolved over centuries. At its core, this mythology provides a window into the Japanese worldview, where nature, spirituality, and humanity are deeply interconnected. It reveals how the Japanese people have understood their place in the universe, the origins of their land, and the divine forces that shape their existence.
Korean Mythology - The unique characteristics of Korean mythology are closely tied to the geography and history of the region. The Korean Peninsula, surrounded by mountains, forests, and the sea, provided a fertile backdrop for the imagination of its people. Myths and legends often feature these elements as symbolic representations of life, death, and the balance of power between the human and the divine. From the founding myth of Dangun, the legendary progenitor of Korea, to the tales of celestial dragons and fox spirits, these stories capture the dynamic interplay between the mundane and the mystical.

    The Irish Troubles - Conflict...

The deep divisions that came to define the Troubles in Northern Ireland have their roots in centuries of conflict, conquest, and colonization. The split between the largely Catholic Irish population and the Protestant settlers brought by British rule laid the groundwork for enduring hostility. This divide was not merely religious but deeply political and cultural, with Catholic nationalists largely advocating for a united Ireland, while Protestant unionists were loyal to the British crown and sought to remain part of the United Kingdom. These opposing identities hardened over time, especially in the north, where British colonization during the 16th and 17th centuries planted a Protestant presence in predominantly Catholic lands, most notably in the province of Ulster.
The 1921 partition of Ireland formalized the division, creating Northern Ireland as a separate political entity within the United Kingdom. While the south eventually became the Republic of Ireland, the north remained under British control with a Protestant-majority government. This arrangement was viewed by many Catholics as both illegitimate and oppressive, fostering a sense of exclusion and marginalization. Protestants, in turn, felt under siege by the threat of Irish republicanism and feared losing their political and cultural dominance. The new state was marked from the beginning by systemic discrimination against the Catholic minority in areas such as housing, employment, and political representation.
Tensions simmered for decades, occasionally flaring into violence, but it was in the 1960s that the situation began to unravel. Inspired by civil rights movements elsewhere, Northern Irish Catholics began organizing protests demanding equal treatment and an end to institutionalized bias. The state’s heavy-handed response to these demonstrations, combined with Protestant fears of losing control, only intensified the divide.

Gardening at the Margins tells the remarkable story of a diverse group of neighbors working together to grow food and community in the Santa Clara Valley in California. Based on four years of deeply engaged ethnographic field research via a Participatory Action Research project with the people and ecosystems of La Mesa Verde home garden program, Gabriel R. Valle develops a theory of convivial labor to describe how the acts of care among the diverse gardeners—through growing, preparing, and eating food in one of the most income unequal places in the country—are powerful, complex acts of resistance.

The individuals featured in the book are imagining and building alternative worlds and futures amid the very real challenges they embody and endure. Climate change, for example, is forcing thousands of migrants to urban areas, which means recent immigrants' traditional environmental, nutritional, and healing knowledge will continue to be threatened by the pervasiveness of modernity and the homogenization of global capitalism. Moreover, once rural people migrate to urban areas, their ability to retain traditional foodways will remain difficult without spaces of autonomy. The stories in this book reveal how people create the physical space to grow food and the political space to enact autonomy to revive and restore agroecological knowledge needed for an uncertain future.
