Sinossi

Vanity Fair: A Novel without a Hero is a novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray. The subtitle, A Novel without a Hero, is apt because the characters are all flawed to a greater or lesser degree; even the most sympathetic have weaknesses, for example Captain Dobbin, who is prone to vanity and melancholy. The human weaknesses Thackeray illustrates are mostly to do with greed, idleness, and snobbery, and the scheming, deceit and hypocrisy which mask them. None of the characters are wholly evil, although Becky's psychopathic tendencies make her come pretty close. However, even Becky, who is amoral and cunning, is thrown on her own resources by poverty and its stigma. (She is the orphaned daughter of a poor artist and an opera dancer.) Thackeray's tendency to highlight faults in all of his characters displays his desire for a greater level of realism in his fiction compared to the rather unlikely or idealized people in many contemporary novels.

The novel is a satire of society as a whole, characterized by hypocrisy and opportunism, but it is not a reforming novel; there is no suggestion that social or political changes, or greater piety and moral reformism could improve the nature of society. It thus paints a fairly bleak view of the human condition. This bleak portrait is continued with Thackeray's own role as an omniscient narrator, one of the writers best known for using the technique. He continually offers asides about his characters and compares them to actors and puppets, but his scorn goes even as far as his readers; accusing all who may be interested in such "Vanity Fairs" as being either "of a lazy, or a benevolent, or a sarcastic mood".

G.L.Vandenburg wrote quirky and funny Science Fiction stories for Amazing Science Fiction Stories, and similar magazines in the 1950's. These four are a selection that give a good taste of his offbeat approach, strange sense of humor and relaxed narrative style that brought joy and excitement to those of us who bought these magazines and saw his name on the cover. In the first, Martian V.F.W., some strange visitors join a parade; in the second, Jubilation, U.S.A, our first visitors from outer space encounter a One-Armed Bandit and don't exactly hit the jackpot; in the third, Moon Glow, the first Americans on the Moon receive an unwelcomed surprise; and in the last, The Observers, a sinister plot involving bald men is thwarted by a dumb secretary ... well kinda. Enjoy!

What would happen if a church flung open its doors and said, "Come on in!"
This is the bestselling Shelter Trilogy, collected for you in one box set. Meet the beloved characters who try to love like Jesus, no matter what.
    Shelter (Book 1)
She begged God to rescue her.
    He said, "Go."
So she headed out into the blizzard. In a car that wasn't exactly hers, with a dog who wasn't exactly a rat terrier, she drove. Until she ran out of gas in the small Maine town of Mattawooptock. Mattawoopwhat? What on earth is God thinking?
But it is there, in a weird little bathroom in a weird little church in a weird little town that Maggie Hansen finds herself. And as God would have it, she finds a lot more than that.
    Daniel (Book 2)
Open Door Church has served as a homeless shelter for more than a decade, but when their pastor dies unexpectedly, it's up to Galen and Maggie to take up the reins and keep the ministry going, which won't be easy, as newcomers seem intent on tearing it down.
And then there's young Daniel, who seems to be working miracles in their midst, which of course, isn't possible. Or is it?
    Revival (Book 3)
A cop killer hiding out in the church. A girl with a terrifying secret. Unpaid bills. Empty cupboards. A pastor so tired, he might not survive the day.
    Is God still listening?
Has Open Door Church run its course?
Or does God have more in store?
When circumstances force Galen to slow down, he hears something new. And he can hardly believe what God has to say.
Shelter and Daniel are narrated by Lisa Kelly. Revival is read by the author.
