Sinossi

"Mr. Raine gives us early Colorado in full and persuasive detail. We see Denver in 1860, with its shanty-lined streets, its brutal citizenry, and its primitive justice. The picture is decidedly stimulating in its reminder that the pioneer days of Colorado are within the memory of men and women now living. We in the snug East need to have our memories thus jogged. The novel does more than that, however, for in it we get an unpretentious, satisfactory adventure story, in which we find the usual outlaws, stagecoaches, and saloons. In addition, there is the love of a lusty lad for a beautiful girl. We find nothing remarkable in the plot, to be sure, but our common sense suffers no assaults. Colorado is, in short, agreeable adventure set against a splendid background." —The Saturday Review

The Help of Angels is a historical novel spanning from 1933 to the end of World War Two in 1945. The protagonist, Benjamin Weiss, grows up happy and healthy in a large, traditional Hungarian Jewish family, in a small city in Europe called Beregszasz, located by the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. When Benjamin becomes a man, the German and Hungarian armies aggressively occupy his home town and the rest of Hungary, and they begin their deportation process, transporting Jews and Gentiles to various concentration camps throughout Europe. Ben finds himself in a camp called Mauthausen, which was once located in Austria. He works hard to stay alive, and retains hope in spite of the atrocities he witnesses and experiences. When three high-ranking nazi officers visit Mauthausen, Ben's fate is thrown into question. The novel is loosely based on the author's family, their story of tragedy and survival during the Second World War, with the addition of some fantastical elements. The story follows the fate of one family, one man, and his friends, but tells how millions suffered at the hands of the ruthless Hungarian and Nazi war criminals. The Help of Angels invites audio book listeners to better understand life in Europe before and during the Holocaust, from a personal and highly unique perspective. The author's mother and father had been born in Hungary, and were survivors of concentration camps during the war. Their parents, some sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, neighbors and acquaintances did not survive. This audio book is a tribute to all who suffer and have suffered in war.

There is something about the number 3.
The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.
Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.
Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

Ethan Frome is Edith Wharton’s masterful tale of isolation, duty, and forbidden longing set against the stark backdrop of rural New England. In the frozen town of Starkfield, Massachusetts, the quiet and physically broken Ethan Frome toils through a bleak existence alongside his cold, hypochondriac wife, Zeena. When her cousin Mattie Silver arrives to help care for Zeena, Ethan finds himself drawn to her warmth and vitality. As their connection deepens, an impossible choice brews beneath the surface—between passion and obligation, between escape and sacrifice.
Told through the eyes of an unnamed outsider who uncovers the tragic story piece by piece, Ethan Frome explores the crushing power of social expectations and the irreversible consequences of a single decision. With its haunting atmosphere and poignant psychological insight, this novella remains one of Wharton’s most enduring and heartbreaking works.

Mayer André Marcel Schwob was born in Chaville, Hauts-de-Seine, France on 23rd August 1867 into a cultivated Jewish family.

As a child he devoured the works of Poe and Stevenson in French and then again in English. His attachment to the bizarre and dark was already forming.

His education at the Lycée of Nantes earned him the 1st Prize for Excellence. In 1881, he was in Paris with his maternal uncle to study at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand. Schwob quickly developed his multilingual abilities and then studied philology and Sanscrit at the École pratique des hautes études before completing his military service in Vannes with the artillery.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in 1888 he became a professional journalist and worked for the Phare de la Loire, the Événement and L'Écho de Paris.

The 1890’s marked his establishment as a brilliant writer with the publication of six short story collections.

He fell ill in 1896 with a chronic, incurable intestinal disorder. He also suffered recurring bouts of influenza and pneumonia. Intestinal surgery was given several times, at first with success but, by 1900, after two more surgeries, he was told that nothing more could be done for him. Schwob now existed on kefir and fermented milk.

By the turn of the century, despite failing health, and often too ill to write, he embarked on several long travels, including to Vailima in the South Pacific where his literary hero Stevenson had died.

Schwob was regarded as a symbolist writer and a ‘precursor of Surrealism’. He wrote over a hundred short stories, journalistic articles, essays, biographies, literary reviews and analysis, translations and plays.

Marcel Schwob died on 26th February 1905 of Pneumonia. He was 37.
