Sinossi

The Collected Works of William Le Queux showcases the prolific narratives of a writer who played a pivotal role in shaping early 20th-century thrillers and socio-political commentary. Spanning various genres, including espionage, detective fiction, and romance, Le Queux's works encapsulate the anxieties and marvels of the pre-World War I era. His literary style juxtaposes vivid characterization with intricate plotting, reflecting the heightened tensions of his time while engaging readers through a blend of adventure and speculative fiction that draws upon contemporary concerns about national security and imperialism. William Le Queux, a British author born in 1864, emerged from a background steeped in journalism and storytelling. His early career as a reporter immersed him in the workings of international affairs and crime, experiences that ignited his imagination and inspired his writing. Le Queux's fascination with espionage and his apprehension about foreign threats led him to craft narratives that resonated with a readership grappling with issues of identity, authority, and the unknown. His work was also a precursor to the popular British spy novels that would dominate literary culture in subsequent decades. Readers seeking a foundational understanding of early 20th-century thrillers will find The Collected Works of William Le Queux indispensable. Jan Branch, an old friend of Melia, has come back to Salford. Her mother has died. She wants to clear the house, and return home to the Far East, getting back to her serious business of gun-running. But she is distracted. She is accosted (and not in a nice way) by one of the youngest members of the Batter family, who seems to have got the idea that Jan can help him find his grandfather's buried 'Treasure'. Jan has to slap to kid down, but she is intrigued. Jimmy Batter's lost fortune? It's worth more than a tired old house, she thinks, and determines to join the hunt. The kid seemed to be under the impression she had to clues to the location. If only she could remember! Then the money would be hers. She decides to stick around.
Besides, she could do some business while in town. There is an Arms Fair in Manchester that week, and she realises she might pick up some bargains. First, though, she picks up an ugly litte squirt called Bim Turkay, a sometime 'partner' in her guns business. Bim tells her he is there to 'kill two birds with one stone'. One of those birds is Melia.
Bim is an unlikely assassin, but there is money on the table, provided by a consortium of armaments dealers, who haven't forgotten that Melia was responsible for the death of their dear old pal Tryst, (while she was on a previous mission, undercover). Melia, of course, has moved on, and needs prompting to remember the incident. She has other things on her mind - like an attractive young man called John that she happened to meet on the briefest of holidays recently. He is still in Spain, but he promises to join her in Britain later, and also, please, can he help her find a dear friend of his who seems to have disappeared? The victim is called Paul Batter. Now there's a coincidence.
With people so focussed on their own issues, it's no wonder that the continuing pandemic is almost forgotten. The public is getting reckless.

When a young lady approaches Sherlock Holmes looking for help in finding out what happened to her father when he disappeared 10 years earlier, both Holmes and Watson are sent on a mission involving stolen treasure, service in colonial India, and a secret pact among four ex-convicts.

Born in 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle is the author most famous for creating the detective Sherlock Holmes and is renowned as the world's greatest crime fiction writer. Spending his childhood in Scotland, his first career choice was to be a doctor, and indeed he ended up with his own medical practice. It was during the failure of this first business venture that Doyle began writing to pass the time. With the creation of Sherlock Holmes, Doyle embarked on a series of crime stories that brought new levels of realism to a marginalized genre. He also became a real-life detective on occasion, personally investigating two crimes that eventually led to the release of the accused men. His Sherlock Holmes stories have found enduring popularity and have seen countless Television, Stage, and film adaptations over the course of the last century.
