Summary

In "Talks To Teachers On Psychology; And To Students On Some Of Life's Ideals," William James offers a profound exploration of the intersection between psychology and education, delivering insights that remain remarkably relevant. Written in an accessible style that combines anecdotal richness with rigorous psychological principles, James addresses the moral and practical dimensions of teaching. This book situates itself within the broader context of early 20th-century psychology, reflecting the burgeoning understanding of the mind while advocating for experiential learning and the cultivation of individuality among students. William James, often regarded as the father of American psychology, draws on his extensive background in philosophy and psychology, as well as his commitment to pragmatism, to craft his ideas. His own experiences as a student and educator inform his perspectives, highlighting the need for education to inspire critical thought and a sense of purpose in students' lives. James's expertise in human behavior combined with his belief in the transformative power of education gives his writings an enduring significance. This book is recommended for educators, students, and anyone interested in the philosophical underpinnings of psychology and education. Is your child a picky eater? Do they insist on having the same foods served over and over again? For many kids, picky eating is a sensory issue—whether it's the smell, taste, texture, or appearance of food. So, how can you help your child overcome these sensory sensitivities and ensure that they get the nourishment they need?

Written by a pediatric occupational therapist with a specialty certification in feeding, eating, and swallowing, Raising Adventurous Eaters offers eight evidence-based sensory strategies to help kids foster a healthy relationship with food. You'll learn all about how picky eating can be caused by sensory processing differences, and find step-by-step strategies for dealing with each sense. By learning to lean into their senses, children will better understand what's going on in their bodies. This fosters an intuitive eating approach, teaching kids to listen to their body's hunger and fullness cues and respect and respond to those cues appropriately.

Whether or not your child has a diagnosis of sensory processing disorder (SPD), or simply has sensory sensitivities when it comes to food, this book will help you set your child up for successful mealtimes, turning the most stressful time of the day into a time that your family can spend relaxing and bonding together around the table.

The borderlands of the paranormal include some bizarre stories. However, none are more strange or unsettling than the tale of what became known as the Philadelphia Experiment, an alleged effort during World War II to make a US Navy ship invisible by using electrical power.
The purported experiment gained international fame with the publication of a book by Charles Berlitz in 1978 and has now entered the lexicon of popular imagination. More than one movie has featured this experiment, but even as more people have heard about the Philadelphia Experiment, there are a number of different accounts of just what is said to have happened. The most dramatic accounts involve the brief teleportation of a US Navy warship and its crew into another dimension, with subsequent and horrifying effects for the men on board when it returned. Other versions are a little more mundane, but all seem to agree that something very odd happened to a US Navy ship in 1943.
This is a complex story, first emerging in the late 1950s before coming to international attention in the 1970s and developing in the 1980s and after. It involves some of the foremost scientists of the 20th century, and while it is a truly fascinating tale, it is one that has caused (and continues to generate) a great deal of debate. Is the Philadelphia Experiment a hoax, a myth, or somehow partly true, and how did this story first emerge? Readers may be more than a little surprised at the outcome.

    Kant Today - A Survey

In Kant Today: A Survey, Erich Przywara explores the enduring impact of the tensions inherent in Immanuel Kant’s thought on continental philosophy over nearly a century and a half. Drawing parallels to the efforts at synthesis of Thomas Aquinas, Przywara presents Kant as a thinker striving to reconcile disparate currents of contemporary thought. While Aquinas fused neo-Platonic Augustinian philosophy with the neo-Aristotelianism of the Parisian Arts Faculty, Kant sought to harmonize continental idealism with the skepticism and empiricism exemplified by a British thinker like David Hume.   Aquinas’s synthesis maintained coherence due to his reliance on the analogia entis. In contrast, Kant’s synthesis lacked such a unifying principle, leading to the proliferation of philosophical antitheses reverberating throughout nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Europe. Kant Today chronicles the aftermath of Kant’s tumultuous synthesis and suggests that the resolution may lie in a thinker capable of uniting Augustine’s fervent pursuit of God with Aquinas’s distinctive epistemological equilibrium—namely, John Henry Newman.
