Sinossi

“A work that leads us to the very rim of the unknown.” –H.P. Lovecraft What does the edge of early 19th-century reality look like? Step into The House on the Borderland, where Hodgson's genius blurs reality and fiction at the crossroads of Victorian Gothic moodiness and new-age science. This newly refined edition, with insights from horror icon Jonathan Maberry, defines a genre. The story begins with the discovery of a manuscript amidst odd ruins. Within its damp pages is an unfathomable tale: A recluse and his dog confront shifting dimensions of spacetime and otherworldly horrors in their forsaken, remote house, exposing a ragged swath of the unknown that lurks just at the edge of reality. Hodgson, often named the “father of weird fiction,” inspired H.P. Lovecraft, of Cthulhu Mythos fame. Rediscover the novel that Lovecraft described as a profound influence. It’s a work that reshapes reality itself, a stormy night must-read for those seeking a blend of Stephen King's thrill and Lovecraft's depth. An oddly inspiring journey of weird science fiction awaits you. Rediscover a classic masterpiece that continues to mesmerize readers today. Open the door and approach the secrets within The House on the Borderland. It’s a timeless experience that will change you forever.

The Saturnalia carnival marks three years since Nina walked away from Philadelphia's elite Saturn Club—with its genteel debauchery, arcane pecking order, and winking interest in alchemy and the occult. In doing so, she abandoned her closest friends and her chance to climb the social ladder. Since then, she's eked out a living by telling fortunes with her Saturn Club tarot deck, a solemn initiation gift that Nina always considered a gag but has turned out to be more useful than she could have ever imagined.

For most, the Saturnalia carnival marks a brief winter reprieve for the beleaguered people of the historic city, which is being eroded by extreme weather, a collapsing economy, and feverish summers—whose disease carrying mosquitos are perhaps the only thing one can count on. Like Thanksgiving or Halloween, Saturnalia has become a purely American holiday despite its pagan roots; and nearly everyone, rich or poor, forgets their troubles for a moment.

For Nina, Saturnalia is simply a cruel reminder of the night that changed everything for her. But when she gets a chance call from Max, one of the Saturn Club's best-connected members and her last remaining friend, the favor he asks will plunge her back into the Club's wild solstice masquerade, on a mysterious errand she cannot say no to.

The story traces the history of the titular street in a New England city, presumably Boston, from its first beginnings as "but a path" in colonial times to a quasi-supernatural occurrence in the years immediately following World War I. As the city grows up around the street, it is planted with many trees and built along with "simple, beautiful houses of brick and wood", each with a rose garden. As the Industrial Revolution runs its course, the area degenerates into a run-down and polluted slum, with all of the street's old houses falling into disrepair.
After World War I and the October Revolution, the area becomes home to a community of Russian immigrants. Among the new residents is the leadership of a "vast band of terrorists," who are plotting the destruction of the United States on Independence Day. When the day arrives, the terrorists gather to do the deed, but before they can get started, all the houses in the street collapse concurrently on top of each other, killing them all. Observers at the scene testify that immediately after the collapse, they experienced visions of the trees and rose gardens that had once been in the street.
