Sinossi

The Derelict is a short story by William Hope Hodgson, first published in 1912. An elderly ship's doctor recounts a strange event that happened to him some years earlier, in the context of discussing his ideas about a fundamental life force that can manifest itself in the presence of proper materials. While sailing as a passenger, a sudden storm disables the ship. In the aftermath, a derelict vessel is discovered. Excerpt: "'Seen anything of Carnacki lately?' I asked Arkright when we met in the City. 'No,' he replied. 'He's probably off on one of his jaunts. We'll be having a card one of these days inviting us to No. 472, Cheyne Walk, and then we'll hear all about it. Queer chap that.'"

Equal parts mystery and epic novel inspired by historical events, Foreign Seed plunges listeners into the search for a man who seems to vanish out of thin air.

China, June 1918. When the explorer Frank Meyer suddenly disappears from a ferry on the Yangtze River, American Vice-Consul Samuel Sokobin is tasked with finding the missing man. By the time Sokobin receives the case, four days have passed since Meyer was last seen on the vast river. With no clues to guide his search and fearing failure in his new post as a man of rank, Sokobin heads upriver with Mr. Lin, a Chinese interpreter he's never met. The investigation soon turns deeply personal for Sokobin, who can't help but conflate Meyer's fate with that of his own daring younger brother—a fighter pilot gone MIA in the world war. As Sokobin continues to search for answers, this mental connection threatens to break him, and he's forced to contend with the biggest question of all: what do we do when the answers we most desperately seek are the very ones that elude us?

A sweeping tale of loss and grief, Foreign Seed is a moving testament to friendship, faith, and the resilience of the human spirit. Allison Alsup's exquisitely-researched debut novel will stay in listeners' hearts and minds long after they've finished the last page.

Ian Sullivan, a studious and dutiful thirteen-year-old, finds solace and escape from the baking heat of the Australian outback by immersing himself in classic works of fiction. At first, he thinks he has found a kindred spirit when Anthony Messina, the son of the new town butcher, joins St. Kieran’s for the start of the 1963 school year. And as a bonus, Anthony’s sister Sophia seems to like him as well.
While the little Queensland town of Verity Creek embraces the new butcher, Ian gradually realizes that something is very wrong in the Messina home. Normally Ian would turn to his parents for guidance, but he feels directly responsible for two tragedies that may tear his family apart. He is certain his parents want to deal with him as little as possible.
Ian is closest to his older sister Mary, but she is over four hundred miles away. Mary sings the praises of the nuns at her boarding school in Townsville so when Ian realizes that Sophia is in real danger, he convinces her that they need to escape and find sanctuary at St. Brigid’s.
In the year when his life turns upside down, Ian learns that figuring out what’s true and then doing what’s right are the hardest things about growing up.
