Sinossi

In "An Autobiography of Buffalo Bill," William Frederick Cody, famously known as Buffalo Bill, intricately weaves a tapestry of the American West through his compelling personal narrative. Written in a conversational yet vivid style, the autobiography reflects the zeitgeist of the late 19th century, capturing the spirit of a nation grappling with its identity amid rapid change. Cody's reflections on his adventures as a scout, bison hunter, and showman illuminate the rugged landscapes and vibrant cultures of the West, all while highlighting the tensions between myth and reality in the American frontier. The book serves both as a memoir and a critical piece of Americana, revealing the complexities of a nation in transition. William Frederick Cody emerged from humble beginnings in Illinois and quickly became a celebrated figure in the Wild West. His experiences in the military and his role in the popularization of the American frontier through the Buffalo Bill's Wild West show inspired him to document his life story. Cody's passion for performance art and storytelling was influenced by the cultural milieu of his time, where the West was often romanticized and mythologized. This autobiography is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the American West, cultural myths, and the life of a man who embodied the spirit of his era. Cody's candid insights and captivating anecdotes offer a profound portrait of a pioneering figure while inviting readers to explore their own interpretations of the nation's evolving narrative.

From Ashes to OpportunityI see that my purpose—my love—is fixing things. Families, after my dad left. Businesses, struggling to survive. Boats, deserving of glory instead of ashes. —Wes WheelerWes Wheeler has spent his life fixing things. From a young age, the New York native witnessed the decline of his family’s multi-generational boat business, watching it, quite literally, burn to the ground. While sorting through the ashes of the once successfully run company alongside his father, Wheeler’s future was decided for him. Instead of succumbing to the idea that businesses disintegrate and leave behind hordes of unemployed workers, their mission buried beneath burned bridges and abandoned dreams, Wheeler opted to arm himself with a work ethic built on faith, drive, and dogged determination. In The Turnaround Leader, Wheeler recounts his decades of managing projects for rising and falling companies, reshaping organizations, and restructuring business models to stand the test of time. Wheeler’s lifetime of ambition was launched during his humble beginnings as a paper delivery boy, where he discovered the little shifts that make a big difference, from the way he angled the papers he threw, to how he engaged with customers and mapped out his routes. These tiny lessons compounded over time and bolstered him while he faced difficult economic headwinds and ill-suited business leaders that preceded him, his most rewarding challenge being his leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic. In a world where business models are rapidly changing and employment is never promised, Wheeler’s ability to adapt is both inspiring and achievable.

Five Women. A Crumbling City. A Daring Flight to Freedom.

August 2021. The fall of Kabul.
Twenty years after they were defeated, the Taliban storms Afghanistan's capital, claiming every piece of land they pass and plunging the city into chaos.
For Anjali and four other women, who were all from different parts of the world and worked together at the Anglo-American University of Kabul, this moment marks the beginning of a harrowing journey. Forced into hiding, hunted for their work at the University, and unsure of whom to trust, knowing betrayal is just a whisper away, they are bound by one urgent impetus: to get out alive.
What unfolds is an inspiring story of resistance and survival, furtive phone calls, forged documents and midnight dashes through enemy territory-and the relentless courage of women who refuse to be silenced.
Searing and utterly gripping, Escape from Kabul is at once an extraordinary first-person account of sisterhood in crisis as well as a meditation on the meaning of freedom, and what it takes to reclaim agency when the world closes in.

  • Transformer - A Story of Glitter Glam Rock and Loving Lou Reed - cover

Transformer - A Story of Glitter...

In this funny and poignant memoir and cultural history, the television personality, columnist, and author of Drag pays homage to Lou Reed’s groundbreaking album Transformer on its fiftieth anniversary and recalls its influence on his coming of age and coming out through glam rock.
In November 1972, Lou Reed released his album, Transformer because he thought it was “dreary for gay people to have to listen to straight people’s love songs.” That groundbreaking idea echoed with the times. That same year, Sweden was the first country to legalize gender-affirming surgery, and San Francisco struck down employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Sometimes an artistic creation perfectly aligns with a broader social and political history, and Transformer—with the songs “Walk on the Wild Side,” “Perfect Day,” and “Vicious”—perfectly captured its time. “Walk on the Wild Side” was banned on radio across the country but became a massive hit when young people threatened to boycott stations that would not play it. The album's cover featured a high-contrast image of Lou, flaunting a new mascara'd glamrock incarnation, shot by legend Mick Rock, thereby underscoring his intention to create ""a gay album.""
In Transformer, Doonan tells the story of how Lou Reed came to make the album with the help of David Bowie, and places its creation within the course of Reed’s life. Doonan offers first-hand testimony of the album’s impact on the LGBTQ+ community, recalling how it transformed his own life as a 20-year-old working class kid from Reading, England, who had just discovered the joys of London Glam Rock and was sparked by the artistic freedom of Warhol’s The Factory. Transformer was a revelation—hearing Reed’s songs, Doonan understood how the world was changing for him and his friends.
A poignant, personal addition to modern music and LGBTQ+ history, Transformer captures a pivotal moment when those long silenced were finally given a voice. As transgender icon Candy Darling, highlighted in his lyrics, told Reed, “It’s so nice to hear ourselves.”
Supplemental enhancement PDF accompanies the audiobook.
This book would make a great gift for any music lover, LGBTQ+ activist, or history buff looking to learn more about the cultural impact of Lou Reed's Transformer album on the world.
