Sinossi

In "My Literary Passions," William Dean Howells presents a vivid exploration of his literary journey, highlighting the authors and works that shaped his development as a writer and critic. With a distinctive autobiographical style, Howells melds personal narrative with literary analysis, offering readers insight into the connections between his life experiences and the texts he cherishes. The book reflects the literary context of the late 19th century, characterized by the rise of realism and the shifting paradigms of American literature, positioning Howells as both a participant and observer in these transformative dynamics. William Dean Howells, often referred to as the "Dean of American Letters," was a staunch advocate for realism and its power to authentically depict American life. His extensive career as a novelist, critic, and editor, alongside his connections with literary figures such as Mark Twain and Henry James, deeply influenced his perspectives articulated in this work. Howells's own literary passions were informed by a rich tapestry of cultural and philosophical currents present during his lifetime, lending authenticity and depth to his reflections. "My Literary Passions" is highly recommended for readers eager to navigate the interplay between personal narrative and literary critique. Howells's eloquent prose and insightful observations provide a compelling glimpse into the literary landscape of his time, making this book an invaluable resource not only for students of literature but for anyone seeking to understand the evolution of American writing.

For the Record - and other Poems...

This collection of poems was written during almost thirty years' residence in Hong Kong. Most are on explicitly Hong Kong topics, and reflect the writer's personal experience and knowledge of Hong Kong. Those who have emigrated or who have spent a period of time overseas will empathise with the expatriate experience described. Other poems narrate and reflect on personal events and concerns which will resonate with many.
“Gillian Bickley has the sharp eye and strong stomach of the true realist. ... brilliantly observed.... ‘Tobacco’ is about as close as any poet comes to word-perfect... Not even the American minimalist William Carlos Williams could zero in on and capture a detail with more panache. ...A thought-provoking and entertaining contribution to Hong Kong literature. Bickley succeeds in conveying the character of the Fragrant Harbour with humorous rigour.” — David Wilson, Sunday Morning Post, 21 September 2003
“In For the Record and other Poems of Hong Kong, Gillian Bickley inhabits a world of movement, traffic, construction and buildings, but her poetry sees through this to a nature of flying, singing birds and lush green trees existing in harmony or sometimes at odds with modern day Hong Kong. Her work offers a counterpoint of the survival and continuity of nature against which our busy everyday lives are measured. Bickley's Hong Kong is both a universal and a personal one and, like Italo Calvino's book The City, she captures a Hong Kong of the mind, the one city that we all share as a physical space against the myriad cities that we experience and perceive distinctly as our own. She skillfully fuses the human and the natural world". — Dave McKirdy, poet, The Asian Review of Books, 21 September 2003.

    Fortress Britain 1940 -...

Alone, unprepared, and weak. These are generally the words used to describe Britain's position in 1940, part of a narrative that has been built up ever since the end of World War II. However, the reality is very different. On land, sea, and in the air, Britain was prepared. It had the most powerful navy in the world; the RAF was relatively strong, but more importantly, was operating as part of a plan and a joined-up group system that was in reality never in any real danger of being defeated; even the post-Dunkirk British Army was better armed than the post-war narrative tells us. These forces were backed up by the Home Guard, and thousands of men and women in secret roles ready to help fight the invasion of the country. Even if all of this had gone wrong and the Nazis had defeated Britain militarily then a separate, highly secret civilian group were ready to become active only after the occupation had started.

One word associated more than any other during this period of the Second World War is 'alone'—Churchill played upon this in his speeches but in 1940, Britain had a hugely powerful empire. Although in many cases this support was thousands of miles away, the Empire and other Allies would have played a huge role had the Germans had invaded, one that has been overlooked in many accounts.

What if the very medicine that could save your life was locked behind a patent?
Owning the Sun is a powerful and urgent investigation into how the pharmaceutical industry turned lifesaving knowledge into private property—and the global consequences of that transformation. Tracing the rise of medical monopolies from postwar public research to pandemic-era profit wars, this audiobook exposes the systems, laws, and ideologies that prioritize wealth over wellness.
With riveting storytelling and deep analysis, it unpacks how drugs developed with public funds became billion-dollar assets controlled by private corporations. From the AIDS crisis in Africa to the COVID-19 vaccine battles, from grassroots resistance to the call for a new commons, Owning the Sun challenges listeners to reconsider what we value—and who pays the price for progress.
Essential listening for anyone concerned with healthcare, ethics, or justice in the modern world, this audiobook is a call to action: reclaim medicine for the many, not the few.
