Sinossi

Each evening, just before retiring, we will have a little Round-Up of the day's doings, of the problems in our business and home life, of our hopes and ambitions.
We'll try to solve perplexities, dissolve worries, absolve ourselves from pull-backs, and resolve to better our lives.
We'll plan and prepare that we may have more poise—efficiency—peace; that's Pep.
We'll learn how to establish helpful thought habit that our lives may be full of gladsome notes instead of gruesome gloom.
We'll aim at
LIFE—LOVE—LAUGHTER

January 1960. Las Vegas is at its smooth, cool peak. The Strip is a jet-age theme park, and the greatest singer in the history of American popular music summons a group of friends there to make a movie. One is an insouciant singer of Italian songs, ex-partner to the most popular film comedian of the day. One is a short, black, Jewish, one-eyed, singing, dancing wonder. One is an upper-crust British pretty boy turned degenerate B-movie star actor, brother-in-law to an ascendant politician. And one is a stiff-shouldered comic with the quintessential Borscht Belt emcee's knack for needling one-liners. The architectonically sleek marquee of the Sands Hotel announces their presence simply by listing their names: Frank Sinatra. Dean Martin. Sammy Davis, Jr. Peter Lawford. Joey Bishop. They call themselves The Clan. But to an awed world, they are known as The Rat Pack.

They had it all. Fame. Gorgeous women. A fabulous playground of a city and all the money in the world. The backing of fearsome crime lords and the blessing of the President of the United States. But the dark side - over the thin line between pleasure and debauchery, between swinging self-confidence and brutal arrogance - took its toll. In four years, their great ride was over, and showbiz was never the same.

From a National Book Award finalist, an “entertaining and inspiring” biography of the heroic Gettysburg commander, college president, and governor of Maine (Senator George J. Mitchell).   This is a vivid account of the life of Joshua Chamberlain, whose is best known for leading a successful bayonet charge against a Confederate assault that was memorialized in the film Gettysburg—and earned Chamberlain the Medal of Honor. But his life was long and his military, political, and academic careers were filled with numerous notable accomplishments as well, among them the governorship of Maine and presidency of Bowdoin College, before his Civil War wounds finally caught up with him in 1914. This account, with illustrations included, tells his absorbing, wide-ranging story, explores his continuing mystique, and paints a vivid picture of late nineteenth-century New England.   “A worthy tribute to Chamberlain’s lasting legacy.” —Civil War Book Review “Joshua Chamberlain was much more than a war hero, and Pullen’s thoughtful book fills out the picture of his remarkable life.” —Senator George J. Mitchell   “Reveal[s] a complicated character, without diminishing the almost mythic status he has assumed.” —The Washington Times

From a former Maryland attorney comes the true crime story of accused murderer Orphan Jones—a case mired in the racism and politics of 1930s America. Euel Lee, alias Orphan Jones, was an African American accused of murdering his white employer and family over a single dollar. The tumultuous events and cast of characters surrounding the racially charged crime garnered national media attention and changed the course of Maryland history. With exacting research, former Maryland State’s Attorney Joseph E. Moore reconstructs the murders, the ensuing roller coast of a trial, and the eventual conviction and execution of Orphan Jones. Moore details all of this in the context of Jim Crow politics and American society during the Great Depression in this gripping true crime account.

The Denver Broncos coach and Super Bowl champion recalls his life and lessons learned from his father, NFL coach Bum Phillips, in this football memoir. Decorated National Football League coach Wade Phillips demonstrates in loving detail how much of his success, on and off the field, he owes to his father. A beloved character in NFL history, Bum taught Wade how to have perspective on the game during tough times—and that “coaching isn’t bitching.” Wade has since passed these and other lessons down to his son, Wes Phillips, an NFL coach himself. Known for his homespun, plain-talking ways, Wade is a groundbreaking coach who has long believed in using support and camaraderie—instead of punishment and anger—to inspire his players. And though his defensive concepts are revolutionary, he would say they begin with common sense. Son of Bum is more than one man’s memoir—it’s a story of family and football and a father who inspired his son.“Having played for and against Wade Phillips, the first word that comes to my mind is respect. SON OF BUM is a great read about the Xs and Os from one of the greatest coaches in the league, as well as a loving tribute to the influence of family.”—Peyton Manning

In this biography Mary A. Hamilton gives a British person’s perspective on the 16th President of the United States. A glowing tribute to “Honest Abe”, the author traces Lincoln’s ancestral roots and recounts his birth in Kentucky, his youth in Indiana, his adult life in Illinois and his years in the White House. She also provides a good background on the causes and course of the American Civil War.Hamilton is not always historically precise. For example, she erroneously names Jefferson Davis as the Southern Democratic candidate for president running against Lincoln and Douglas in 1860 rather than John C. Breckinridge. However, overall “The Story of Abraham Lincoln” is a good summarization and interesting account of the life, values and politics of Lincoln.Produced by Devin Lawerence in VrndavanaEdited by Macc Kay in BangkokProduction executive Avalon Giuliano in LondonICON Intern Eden Giuliano in DelhiMusic By AudioNautix With Their Kind Permission©2020 Icon Audio Arts (P) 2020 Icon Audio Arts LLCGeoffrey Giuliano is the author of over thirty internationally bestselling biographies, including the London Sunday Times bestseller Blackbird: The Life and Times of Paul McCartney and Dark Horse: The Private Life of George Harrison.
