Sinossi

In 'A History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere,' William Berryman Scott meticulously chronicles the evolution and diversity of terrestrial mammals that have inhabited North America and South America. The book's analytical framework is deeply rooted in paleontological evidence, augmented by a thorough review of existing literature, which allows Scott to present a comprehensive narrative that interweaves geological contexts with biological evolution. His prose is both accessible and informative, striking a balance between scientific rigor and engaging storytelling. This work is an important contribution to the field of vertebrate paleontology and exemplifies the early 20th-century scholarly pursuit of integrating fossil records with contemporary ecological understanding. William Berryman Scott, a distinguished American paleontologist, dedicated his life to the study of mammals, significantly influencing the field through his research and advocacy for science in education. His academic lineage, rooted in the Princeton University and the American Museum of Natural History, provided him with rich access to fossil collections and data that informed his comprehensive survey on mammals. In this book, Scott eloquently expresses his passion for understanding the past and its implications for contemporary biodiversity. Readers with an interest in natural history, paleontology, and evolutionary biology will find Scott's work both enlightening and influential. Ideal for scholars and enthusiasts alike, 'A History of Land Mammals in the Western Hemisphere' not only serves as an essential academic reference but also instills a sense of wonder about the rich tapestry of life that has flourished across these lands.

A black hole is a region in space where the gravitational pull is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape from it. This occurs when a massive amount of matter is compressed into a very small area, creating a powerful gravitational field.
Black holes form through various processes that involve the collapse of massive astronomical objects and the merging of smaller black holes. One primary method is the stellar collapse. Stars, during their lifecycle, fuse hydrogen into helium in their cores. When the hydrogen is depleted, they begin fusing heavier elements until iron is produced. For stars more than 20 times the mass of the Sun, the end of this fusion process leads to a supernova explosion. The core of the star collapses rapidly due to gravity, and if the core's mass is sufficiently large (typically more than about three times the mass of the Sun), it will continue collapsing into a singularity, forming a stellar-mass black hole.

Another way black holes can form is through accretion and growth. A compact object like a neutron star or a white dwarf can accumulate matter from a companion star or its surroundings. As this matter accumulates, the mass of the compact object increases, and it may eventually reach a critical mass where it collapses into a black hole.

    The Fabric of Cosmos -...

The story of dark matter begins not in the distant reaches of the universe, but in the questions that humans have asked for centuries. What is the universe made of? Why do galaxies behave the way they do? As our tools for observing the cosmos improved, so did our understanding—but with every answer came more mystery. In the early 20th century, astronomers began to notice strange things. Galaxies were spinning in ways that defied the laws of physics, at least as we understood them. The stars on the outer edges of galaxies were moving far too fast to be held together by the gravity from visible matter alone. There had to be something else out there, something invisible, something we couldn’t detect with telescopes. This was one of the first big hints that something massive and unseen—what we now call dark matter—was shaping the universe.
Modern cosmology was born when scientists started to view the universe not just as a collection of stars and planets, but as a dynamic, evolving structure governed by deep physical laws. Einstein’s theory of general relativity reshaped our understanding of space, time, and gravity. Suddenly, the universe was a place where space could bend, expand, and even accelerate. These ideas led to the Big Bang theory and the realization that the cosmos had a beginning and has been changing ever since. But as astronomers began mapping out galaxies and measuring their movements, inconsistencies popped up. The math didn’t add up unless we assumed that most of the mass in the universe was missing from our view. That mass didn’t emit light, didn’t reflect it, and didn’t absorb it. It was dark, but it was there.

Pandemics, massive earthquakes, war, and other catastrophes inspire immediate action because their casualties and destruction are immediately visible. Climate change is an unyielding problem because its long-range dangers are hidden, and thus it is a global risk unlike anything in human experience

The federal government recently announced aggressive climate targets for Canada. We have committed to producing net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which will require major changes for our economy and way of life. Canadian citizens need to understand why our most distinguished climate scientists and our senior political leaders think that we must meet this target. Canada and Climate Change explains the importance of policies that will ensure we meet the net-zero emissions target. William Leiss provides a firm grasp on what climate change is and how scientists have described shifts in the earth’s climate as they have occurred over hundreds of millions of years and as they are likely to occur in the near future, especially by the end of this century.

Leiss argues that citizens have a right to place their trust in what climate scientists tell us. Canada and Climate Change is an essential primer on where we stand on the issue of climate change in Canada and what will unfold in the years ahead.
