Sinossi

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Willa Cather, an analysis of the literature of a free and empowered woman

First published in 1920, “Youth and the Bright Medusa” is a collection of eight of the stories that the American author Willa Cather had written over the past twenty years, stories of the perilous pursuit of the bright medusa of art in a hostile, materialistic world; in short, stories about artists and the art.
“Youth and the Bright Medusa” includes some of Cather's best tales: “Coming, Aphrodite!” focuses on a dedicated painter and his affair with a singer in pursuit of celebrity; “Paul’s Case” and “A Wagner Matinée” tell of a young man and an old woman with artistic longings crushed by their environments; “The Sculptor’s Funeral” and “The Diamond Mine” show the high costs of success.
Four of the stories in the collection were reprinted from Cather’s first published collection of fiction, “The Troll Garden” (1905).
Disponibile da: 10/09/2022.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

In this volume our authors show that Modernism was once cutting edge. A way to explore, create, show and share in new ways. Decades may have passed but their words still seem fresh and new and cutting edge. Genius in every name.

Singapore Literature Prize winner Yong Shu Hoong’s latest book features more than just poetry. There is also a ghostly tale at its core, complete with prose poems and micro fiction of exactly 100 words each, as well as annotated excerpts from an abandoned work.

In this viewing party, readers are invited to take a peek into the domain of death and cinema. You are part of a mob of dispassionate onlookers. Sometimes, you get to play the voyeuristic judge.

Winner of the 2014 Singapore Literature Prize for English Poetry

“There’s a warm easiness to Yong’s voice that’s balanced by a sharpness of insight. He cuts through the layers of familial and social habit to the unseen images and urges that give the mundane the sheen of the numinous. If the book is a viewing party, Yong is a genial and attentive host, inviting us in to absorbing scenes of everyday curiosity and surprise.”
