Sinossi

A practical guide to finding a balance between resting and doing so that readers can recharge their energy levels and also do the things that are important to them. Using concepts from occupational therapy about pacing, occupational balance and creativity in everyday life, this approach is based on the Author's professional experience as an occupational therapist and her personal experience of living with chronic illness through which she has learned how to adapt her rest-activity balance, keeping an eye on what (or who) is controlling her decisions and focusing on doing what's important and satisfying in her life. The book is not a quick-fix but includes ways to think about what is most important and satisfying for the individual reader each day so they can work with their own situation as it changes. It is aimed particularly at sufferers from degenerative diseases that involve high levels of cyclical fatigue with no expectation of cure, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, vasculitis, Parkinson's and any other chronic autoimmune disease.

Mind games refer to psychological manipulation used to confuse, control, or manipulate others. They are a set of tactics designed to distort reality and influence someone's perception of situations, often without them realizing it. At the core, mind games prey on emotions, thoughts, and behavior, using subtle cues or calculated moves to lead the targeted individual into a state of confusion, self-doubt, or dependency. These psychological games often occur in situations where one person or group seeks to dominate or maintain power over another, exploiting the vulnerabilities of the victim for personal gain.
The essence of mind games lies in their subtlety. Unlike direct manipulation or coercion, mind games are indirect, creating an illusion of free will while slowly influencing decisions and actions. A skilled manipulator may present ideas, situations, or beliefs in a way that seems harmless or logical on the surface, yet their true purpose is to influence and control how others think and act. In many cases, these tactics are so skillfully executed that the person being manipulated may never even recognize that they are being played.
One of the key aspects of mind games is the element of confusion. Manipulators often engage in tactics that cause the victim to question their own beliefs, memories, and experiences. This psychological tactic, known as gaslighting, is a prime example of mind games at work. By distorting reality, manipulators create uncertainty in their target’s mind, making them doubt their own sense of reality. Over time, this confusion erodes the victim’s confidence and independence, rendering them more susceptible to further manipulation.

Knowing what the Bible says about fear doesn’t always help us feel less anxious. Prayer does not always help either. This book explores the spiritual practices and scriptures that can counteract how anxiety works in the brain. When facing anxiety, some forms of prayer are more helpful than others for each person. This is true both spiritually and psychologically. But here’s help in discerning which practices are most useful in dealing with immediate anxiety, other practices for dealing with root causes, and further suggestions that promote long-term freedom from anxiety’s debilitating effects. These practices can deepen our relationship with God and help reduce anxiety at the same time. Anxiety Transformed: Prayer that Brings Enduring Change brings together insights from spiritual formation, psychotherapy, and neuroscience, as well as the author's personal journey with God through periods of anxiety. These concepts are integrated into a model of life-changing spiritual and psychological transformation.

Most of us look forward to our retirement from full-time work, anticipating more free time and opportunities to play. But the reality of retirement can be hard to adjust to. Unexpected challenges may present themselves, leading us to question who we really are and what we can reasonably expect to accomplish in the remaining years of our lives. We may be confused by our changing relationships with family and friends, which no longer conform to an easy structure.

Retire Smart, Retire Happy is one of the first books to provide guidance on the psychological and emotional adjustments we make in retirement. Nancy Schlossberg provides tips on coping with its ups and downs and reassures us that retirement can be one of the most fulfilling times of one's life. Listeners are introduced to some common personality types among retirees, including Continuers, Adventurers, Searchers, Retreaters, and Easy Gliders. Armed with this knowledge, the author shows us how understanding our retirement "type" can help us put our strengths and resources to work.

Each of the seven chapters contains dozens of examples of situations experienced by actual retirees and includes short self-assessment quizzes. Topics covered include doing a personal inventory, shoring up one's relationships, investigating new roles and activities, and taking charge of one's future.
