Sinossi

In "The Great Horse; or, The War Horse," Walter Sir Gilbey artfully intertwines history and narrative to explore the horse's pivotal role in warfare and society throughout the ages. With a rich literary style that melds anecdotal storytelling with rigorous historical analysis, Gilbey crafts a comprehensive portrait of the war horse, from its ancient origins to its impact on modern cavalry tactics. He pays homage to various breeds, their training, and the profound bond between horse and rider, positioning the equine figure as both a noble companion and a critical instrument of military might. This blend of literary elegance and factual depth establishes the book as a significant contribution to equestrian literature and military history. Walter Sir Gilbey, a prominent figure in the late 19th to early 20th century, was not only a horse enthusiast but also an influential writer known for his expertise on equine matters. His extensive experience in breeding and training horses has infused "The Great Horse" with a practical understanding, while his awareness of the socio-political implications tied to horses in warfare reflects the era's evolving attitudes toward military equestrianism. Gilbey's unique perspective provides readers with both historical context and personal insights, creating a vivid tapestry of the horse'Äôs importance. This book is a must-read for animal lovers, military historians, and anyone intrigued by the declarative bond between humans and horses. Gilbey's meticulously researched narrative not only enchants the reader with tales of valor and companionship but also serves as a crucial reminder of how interconnected our histories are with the creatures who have served alongside us. Engage with this illuminating text and discover the timeless legacy of the war horse.

Japanese mythology is a rich tapestry woven from the threads of ancient stories, religious beliefs, and cultural practices that have evolved over centuries. At its core, this mythology provides a window into the Japanese worldview, where nature, spirituality, and humanity are deeply interconnected. It reveals how the Japanese people have understood their place in the universe, the origins of their land, and the divine forces that shape their existence.
Central to Japanese mythology is the concept of kami, which are spirits or deities that embody natural elements, ancestral spirits, and forces of nature. Unlike many Western interpretations of divinity, kami are not omnipotent or detached from the world; they exist alongside humanity, influencing daily life and requiring respect through rituals and offerings. This spiritual symbiosis between humans and kami has profoundly shaped Japanese cultural identity and continues to manifest in traditional practices and beliefs.
The two primary sources of Japanese mythology, the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters) and the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan), are texts that blend myth, history, and legend. Compiled in the 8th century, these works serve as foundational narratives for understanding the creation of Japan, the lineage of its emperors, and the values upheld by society. From the celestial plains of Takamagahara to the mysterious underworld of Yomi, these texts introduce readers to a vivid cosmology populated by gods, demons, and legendary heroes.

Rust Belt Union Blues - Why...

In the heyday of American labor, the influence of local unions extended far beyond the workplace. Unions were embedded in tight-knit communities, touching nearly every aspect of the lives of members and their families and neighbors. They conveyed fundamental worldviews, making blue-collar unionists into loyal Democrats who saw the party as on the side of the working man. Today, unions play a much less significant role in American life.

Lainey Newman and Theda Skocpol provide timely insight into the relationship between the decline of unions and the shift of working-class voters away from Democrats. Using western Pennsylvania as a case study, Newman and Skocpol argue that union members' loyalty to Democratic candidates was as much a product of the group identity that unions fostered as it was a response to the Democratic Party's economic policies. As the social world around organized labor dissipated, conservative institutions like gun clubs, megachurches, and other Republican-leaning groups took its place.

Rust Belt Union Blues sheds new light on why so many union members have dramatically changed their party politics. It makes a compelling case that Democrats are unlikely to rebuild credibility in places like western Pennsylvania unless they find new ways to weave themselves into the daily lives of workers and their families.

The running joke in Europe for centuries was that anyone in a hurry to die should call the doctor. As far back as ancient Greece, physicians were notorious for administering painful and often fatal treatments—and charging for the privilege. For the most effective treatment, the ill and injured went to the women in their lives. This system lasted hundreds of years. It was gone in less than a century.

Contrary to the familiar story, medication did not improve during the Scientific Revolution. Yet somehow, between 1650 and 1740, the domestic female and the physician switched places in the cultural consciousness: she became the ineffective, potentially dangerous quack, he the knowledgeable, trustworthy expert. The professionals normalized the idea of paying them for what people already got at home without charge, laying the foundation for Big Pharma and today's global for-profit medication system. A revelatory history of medicine, The Apothecary's Wife challenges the myths of the triumph of science and instead uncovers the fascinating truth. Drawing on a vast body of archival material, Karen Bloom Gevirtz depicts the extraordinary cast of characters who brought about this transformation. She also explores domestic medicine's values in responses to modern health crises, such as the eradication of smallpox, and what benefits we can learn from these events.

The Song Dynasty (960–1279) emerged from a period of political fragmentation and military strife known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907–960). Following the collapse of the Tang Dynasty in 907, China was divided among competing warlords and regional states, each vying for power. The unification of China under the Song Dynasty marked the beginning of a new era of stability, economic prosperity, and cultural flourishing.
The dynasty was founded by Emperor Taizu (Zhao Kuangyin), a capable military general who seized power in 960 through a relatively peaceful coup known as the Chenqiao Mutiny. As the commander of the Later Zhou army, Taizu was persuaded by his loyal officers to take the throne and establish a new dynasty. Unlike previous rulers who relied on military force to maintain control, Taizu implemented policies aimed at reducing the power of the military aristocracy while strengthening the centralized government. One of his first major reforms was ensuring that top military commanders were replaced by civilian officials, significantly reducing the likelihood of future military coups.
Although the early Song rulers sought to consolidate power within China, they faced constant threats from neighboring states. The Khitan-led Liao Dynasty controlled much of the northern frontier, while the Western Xia and later the Jurchen-led Jin Dynasty posed additional challenges. The Song, unable to achieve military dominance over these rival states, often resorted to diplomacy, alliances, and even paying tribute in exchange for peace. This reliance on diplomacy over warfare became a defining characteristic of Song foreign policy.

Do you ever feel like you're just not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough in certain areas? Do these beliefs keep you from seeking out new opportunities or challenges, because you're afraid of failing? If so, you may be suffering from a "fixed mindset." In contrast, a "growth mindset" is the belief that you can increase your ability or develop your attributes—that you can adapt and learn from your mistakes. But how do you cultivate a growth mindset?

The Growth Mindset Workbook offers essential skills grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to change the way you think about your own talents and abilities. Based on the core principles outlined in Mindset by Carol Dweck, this workbook will help you shed unhelpful and self-limiting attitudes and beliefs, and replace them with a growth mindset that can increase resiliency, boost self-confidence, and form the foundation of a meaningful, values-based life.

The most important thing to remember is that a growth mindset can be learned, and doing so can positively impact how you think, feel, and act. If you're ready to say yes to life's challenges and maximize your potential, this step-by-step guide can show you the way.
