Sinossi

In "The Complete Poetry of Sir Walter Scott," the renowned Scottish novelist and poet presents a comprehensive anthology of his lyrical works, encapsulating the romantic spirit and nationalistic fervor of the early 19th century. Scott's poetry blends personal emotion with rich historical narrative, often drawing inspiration from the Scottish landscape and folklore. His varied poetic style ranges from the ballads of the "Lay of the Last Minstrel" to the reflective verses of "Marmion," highlighting his ability to evoke a wide spectrum of themes, including chivalry, love, and the clash of cultures, while reflecting the influences of Romanticism that dominated his era. Walter Scott, often dubbed the 'Äòfather of the historical novel,'Äô was deeply influenced by his Scottish heritage and the turbulent history of his homeland. His background as a lawyer and an avid antiquarian fueled his fascination with Scottish history and legend, which finds ample representation in his poetry. Scott'Äôs literary career was not only shaped by his personal experiences but also by the broader cultural movements of his time, addressing themes of identity and nationhood, which would resonate throughout his works. This curated collection is essential reading for anyone interested in the interplay of history and poetry, as it reveals Scott'Äôs profound impact on the literary landscape. The volume not only serves as an introduction to Scott'Äôs poetic genius but also invites readers to engage with the vibrant tapestry of early 19th-century Scottish culture.

Unlike his more famous fellow war poets, Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke, Siegfried Sassoon survived the First World War. In this collection of 64 poems, first published in 1920, Sassoon portrays the dehumanizing horror of modern warfare with its staggering death toll, while also satiring the jingoistic fervour of politicians and armchair strategists.
Sassoon's own war service fell into two distinct periods. The first was marked by a number of heroic actions on the battlefield which earned him the Military Cross. However, after a period of convalescence in 1917, Sasson became a pacifist and refused to return to active duty. This change of attitude was diagnosed as a psychological disorder and he was posted to Ireland where he trained new recruits. By the end of the war he had been promoted to captain. For the rest of his long life he remained staunchly anti-war.

In May 1926, Britain grinds to a halt, as workers down tools for the General Strike.
With the printing presses shut down, the only sources of news are the government's British Gazette, edited by Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill, and the independent, fledgling British Broadcasting Company, led by John Reith. The stage is set for a fierce battle over control of the news and who gets to define the truth.
Jack Thorne's When Winston Went To War With The Wireless is a gripping play about the birth of a great British institution and its efforts to stay impartial. It premiered at the Donmar Warehouse, London, in June 2023, directed by Katy Rudd, with Stephen Campbell Moore as Reith, Adrian Scarborough as Churchill, and Haydn Gwynne as Stanley Baldwin.

Poetry. A form of words that seems so elegantly simple in one verse and so cleverly complex in another. Each poet has a particular style, an individual and unique way with words and yet each of us seems to recognise the path and destination of where the verses lead, even if sometimes the full comprehension may be a little beyond us.

Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy.

In the volumes of this series, we take a look at poetry through the prism of individual regions of England, or sometimes more quaintly known as ‘Albion’, or ‘Blighty’, through the centuries of its gloried history.

England, despite its perception of reserve and under-statement has, in reality, strode the global stage at various time in many things, both good and bad, from Empire to long distance running. Here our focus in on its literature. Famed for its fiction and dramas, it is equally admired for its plethora of gifted poets and the dazzling verse which has added so much to its artistic legacy. These classic poets are wonders of their age and of their art. Genius is written in their names.

In this volume the instantly globally recognisable city of London has, for century after century, dominated the country. Its rich history of art, culture and commerce interweave with generation after generation of poets to produce a supremely rich tapestry of undimmed brilliance. Our poets include Alexander Pope, Amy Levy, Edmund Spenser, John Keats, G K Chesterton and a host of others. Genius has many names.

A cruel conqueror has captured the Spanish city of Fuente Ovejuna. As his reign of terror builds, the townspeople look within themselves to find the courage to overthrow him. The eminent Spanish playwright Lope de Vega based his best-known play on a historical incident that took place in 1476. Written in the early 17th century, the play remains a timely meditation on honor and selflessness in the face of oppression.
