Sinossi

THE ABBOT by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) in 1820, a sequel to The Monastery. The history is concerned with that period of the life of Mary Queen of Scots which she spent in imprisonment at Lochleven Castle, her escape, the rally of her supporters and their defeat at the battle of Langside. With these historical events is woven the romantic story of Roland Avenel, over whose parentage hangs a certain mystery. He is sent by the Regent Murray to act as page to Mary Stuart in her imprisonment, with directions to watch and report any attempt at escape. Instead, he becomes an active agent in devising the queen´s flight. The Introductory Epistle to the First Edition informs the reader that the narrative is the continuation of the Benedictine manuscript from which Scott purported to have drawn his preceding novel The Monastery.

This early novel is often called Jane Austen's Gothic parody. Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers are quintessential gothic ingredients;, but the listener is also rewarded with Austen's typical and wonderful sense of satirical humor!.. Our heroine is Catherine Morland, a seventeen-year-old woman from a country parsonage. While spending a few weeks in Bath with a family friend, Catherine falls in love with Henry Tilney, who invites her to visit his family estate, Northanger Abbey. Once there, Catherine, an avid reader of Gothic thrillers, lets the shadowy atmosphere of the old mansion fill her with doubt and fear... What lies behind the death of Henry's mother? Is there a terrible family secret? Can she really rely on Henry? Or has our lovely heroine just read to many gothic stories?

Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) is arguably the greatest European novelist in terms of the range and power of his writing. Most of his short stories predate his long novels and are written in a different style. One of the earliest is An Episode of the Reign of Terror in which two nuns and a priest in hiding from the mob are visited by a stranger with a very peculiar request, and even odder motives behind it.The nuns and the priest are curious as to the identity of the mysterious man... but nothing can prepare the old priest for the shock he experiences when he discovers who his visitor really is....
