Sinossi

In "A Legend of Montrose," Walter Scott weaves an intricate tapestry of historical fiction set against the turbulent backdrop of 17th century Scotland. The narrative centers on the spirited and valorous life of James Graham, the Earl of Montrose, blending thrilling action with profound moral dilemmas. Scott's use of vivid imagery and rich, lyrical language not only captures the historical nuances of the Covenanting Wars but also reflects the Romantic fascination with heroic ideals and the complexities of loyalty. This work exemplifies Scott's mastery in merging narrative with historical authenticity, positioning it firmly in the pantheon of British literature while addressing themes of honor, conflict, and identity. Walter Scott (1771-1832), often regarded as the father of the historical novel, drew upon his deep Scottish heritage and his extensive political and cultural knowledge to craft this compelling work. His experiences growing up in the aftermath of the Jacobite risings, combined with his passion for Scottish folklore and history, provide a rich contextual backdrop that informs the characters and events of this novel. Scott's lifelong engagement with Scottish identity and the turbulent sociopolitical landscape of his homeland lend a unique authenticity to his storytelling. For readers who appreciate richly detailed historical narratives and complex characters, "A Legend of Montrose" is a must-read. Scott's ability to blend history with romance and adventure invites readers into a world where bravery and betrayal coexist, making it a timeless exploration of human nature and historical legacy. Whether you are a student of literature or simply a lover of stories, this novel promises to enchant and inspire.

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born on the 1st April 1875 in Greenwich, London. Leaving school at 12 because of truancy, by the age of fifteen he had experience; selling newspapers, as a worker in a rubber factory, as a shoe shop assistant, as a milk delivery boy and as a ship’s cook.

By 1894 he was engaged but broke it off to join the Infantry being posted to South Africa. He also changed his name to Edgar Wallace which he took from Lew Wallace, the author of Ben-Hur.

In Cape Town in 1898 he met Rudyard Kipling and was inspired to begin writing. His first collection of ballads, The Mission that Failed! was enough of a success that in 1899 he paid his way out of the armed forces in order to turn to writing full time.

By 1904 he had completed his first thriller, The Four Just Men. Since nobody would publish it he resorted to setting up his own publishing company which he called Tallis Press.

In 1911 his Congolese stories were published in a collection called Sanders of the River, which became a bestseller. He also started his own racing papers, Bibury’s and R. E. Walton’s Weekly, eventually buying his own racehorses and losing thousands gambling. A life of exceptionally high income was also mirrored with exceptionally large spending and debts.

Wallace now began to take his career as a fiction writer more seriously, signing with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921. He was marketed as the ‘King of Thrillers’ and they gave him the trademark image of a trilby, a cigarette holder and a yellow Rolls Royce. He was truly prolific, capable not only of producing a 70,000 word novel in three days but of doing three novels in a row in such a manner. It was estimated that by 1928 one in four books being read was written by Wallace, for alongside his famous thrillers he wrote variously in other genres, including science fiction, non-fiction accounts of WWI which amounted to ten volumes and screen plays. Eventually he would reach the remarkable total of 170 novels, 18 stage plays and 957 short stories.

Wallace became chairman of the Press Club which to this day holds an annual Edgar Wallace Award, rewarding ‘excellence in writing’.

Diagnosed with diabetes his health deteriorated and he soon entered a coma and died of his condition and double pneumonia on the 7th of February 1932 in North Maple Drive, Beverly Hills. He was buried near his home in England at Chalklands, Bourne End, in Buckinghamshire.

Trenches Of Despair - The Story...

"Trenches of Despair" tells the devastating story of the Thompson quadruplets—Billy, John, George, and Thomas—four identical brothers from London's East End who lie about their age to enlist in World War I, transforming from eager volunteers into casualties of the war's brutal machinery.
In the summer of 1914, the seventeen-year-old brothers live in a cramped terraced house on Whitmore Street, each with distinct personalities despite their identical appearance. Billy is the natural leader, John the artistic dreamer, George the cheerful entertainer, and Thomas the man of quiet faith. Each has found love—Billy with neighbor Edith Hartwell, John with intellectual Mary Whitfield, George with baker's daughter Florence Meadows, and Thomas with gentle Annie Clarke.
When war breaks out, social pressure mounts through the white feather campaign, where women distribute symbols of cowardice to men not in uniform. The brothers face impossible choices between family duty and national service, ultimately enlisting together after being publicly shamed. Their working-class background contrasts sharply with their upper-class officers, highlighting the war's class divisions.
After training at Aldershot, they deploy to France in early 1915, experiencing their first taste of trench warfare's horror. The Christmas Truce of 1914 becomes a pivotal moment when they meet German soldiers in No Man's Land, sharing songs, photographs, and discovering their enemies' humanity—making the resumption of killing infinitely more tragic.
The brothers survive the early battles, but the war's grinding attrition begins taking its toll. John, the sensitive artist, dies first at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, cut down by a sniper while trying to help wounded comrades. His death devastates the family and his sweetheart Mary, who never recovers from the loss.
Thomas, the man of faith, sacrifices himself at Passchendaele in 1917, charging a German machine gun position to save his section.

IMAGINING THE BENNETS is a monumental prequel, spanning forty years of family saga before Pride and Prejudice. It’s original, intricate, intelligent, and moving. The story offers a wonderful interpretation of the earlier era and is an imagination that is loyal to the original. The narrative is an uncompromising, romantic, hard-hitting, heart-rending, viscerally real, historically epic tale.
How did a rebellious boy with a miserable childhood, who ran away to sea at 15 and whose subsequent life was rich, varied and notable, become the sanguine Lewis Bennet? And how did a feisty, independent, accomplished and well-educated Catherine Gardiner become the worthy but pressured, driven and intense Mrs Bennet? They certainly encountered joy, sadness, trials and tribulations in bringing up their five girls, and somehow they shouldered their deepest fears for twenty years, knowing one or more good marriage was the only way to save the family from penury. How did they bring up those magnificent girls? It is a tale for the ages, as relevant today as it was then.
Who were the two individuals who became the middle-aged couple we know so well, and what of their earlier relationship? They fell madly in love and had the world before them. But what happened along the way, their highs and lows, to lead us the beginning of the wonderful Pride and Prejudice and the paucity of warmth we encounter? And what went on behind those well-loved scenes as Lizzie, Jane and Lydia made their marriages? We may proudly think we know, but we may have our own prejudices challenged. This story will inform and entertain you, containing much that was left unspoken in the great book upon which it is based!
