Synopsis

In "Dogs of All Nations," Walter Esplin Mason delivers a fascinating anthropological exploration of dog breeds across the globe, meticulously categorizing their characteristics, histories, and roles in human society. The book is notable for its engaging prose and vivid illustrations, making it both an informative reference work and an enjoyable read. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century interest in natural sciences and globalization, Mason skillfully weaves together scientific observation with a narrative style that conveys a deep-seated love for canines, reflecting the societal views of his time regarding domestication and human-animal bonds. Walter Esplin Mason, an American writer and journalist, grew up in a time when the fascination with pet ownership and canine diversity was burgeoning. Mason's background in journalism and passion for animals likely inspired him to compile this comprehensive compendium, as he sought to provide readers with a thorough understanding of canine varieties and their cultural significances. His keen observations reveal not only the varied temperaments and behaviors of different breeds but also their varying roles across human civilizations. For any dog lover, breeder, or curious reader, "Dogs of All Nations" serves as an indispensable resource that transcends mere taxonomy. This book invites readers to appreciate the history, beauty, and distinctions of dog breeds while deepening their understanding of the human-dog relationship through a scholarly lens.

The Mughal Empire emerged as one of the most powerful and influential dynasties in Indian history, leaving a lasting impact on culture, architecture, and governance. Its foundation was laid by Babur, a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, who established Mughal rule in the early 16th century. Babur's military prowess and strategic vision enabled him to defeat the Delhi Sultanate in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526. This victory marked the beginning of Mughal dominance in the Indian subcontinent. However, Babur’s reign was short-lived, and it was his grandson, Akbar, who truly solidified the empire’s foundation.
Akbar ascended the throne at a young age and quickly proved himself to be an exceptional leader. His reign, which lasted from 1556 to 1605, was marked by territorial expansion, administrative reforms, and a commitment to cultural and religious harmony. Unlike previous rulers, Akbar recognized the diversity of India and sought to integrate different communities into his empire. He abolished the jizya tax on non-Muslims, promoted interfaith dialogue, and appointed talented individuals from various backgrounds to key positions in his administration. His policy of religious tolerance and inclusive governance earned him the loyalty of many, contributing to the stability and prosperity of the empire.
One of Akbar’s most remarkable achievements was the establishment of an efficient administrative system. He divided his empire into provinces, each governed by appointed officials who reported directly to the central authority. This system ensured effective governance and facilitated tax collection, trade, and law enforcement. Additionally, Akbar introduced a standardized revenue system that helped regulate the economy and promote agricultural growth. His emphasis on merit-based appointments created a well-organized bureaucracy that endured long after his reign.

THE INSTANT #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
From award-winning writer Nigel Slater, comes a new and exquisitely written collection of notes, memoir, stories and small moments of joy.
'Nigel Slater’s prose is the rarest delicacy of all: exquisite yet effortless, filled with heart, tenderness, yearning and humour' ELIZABETH DAY
For years, Nigel Slater has kept notebooks of curiosities and wonderings, penned while at his kitchen table, soaked in a fisherman’s hut in Reykjavik, sitting calmly in a moss garden in Japan or sheltering from a blizzard in a Vienna Konditorei.
These are the small moments, events and happenings that gave pleasure before they disappeared. Miso soup for breakfast, packing a suitcase for a trip and watching a butterfly settle on a carpet, hiding in plain sight. He gives short stories of feasts such as a mango eaten in monsoon rain or a dish of restorative macaroni cheese and homes in on the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan.
This funny and sharply observed collection of the good bits of life, often things that pass many of us by, is utter joy from beginning to end.
‘I loved this. It is a secular book of hours – thoughts and pleasures beautifully cadenced and generously placed’ Edmund de Waal
‘Nigel Slater has a magical capacity to find beauty in the smallest moments. A nourishing, sustaining book’ Olivia Laing
‘His evocative, uplifting observations are a balm for life: a prose-poem for eaters and a spiritual companion for thoughtful cooks. A true and enduring joy’ Nigella Lawson
‘You can’t always feel buoyant and grateful but noticing – and getting pleasure from – the seemingly insignificant is a good way to live. As he says, feel the “small moments of joy”’ Diana Henry
Nigel Slater, a top author and best-seller, continues to captivate with his culinary narratives and non-fiction essays. His travelogues, filled with the scent of freshly picked sweet peas and the sound of water breathing at night in Japan, are a testament to his ability to find beauty in the smallest moments.
For fans of Wendy Macnaughton (Lost Cat), Rick Stein (Under a Mackerel Sky), Alice Waters (Always Home), and Stanley Tucci (What I Ate in One Year).

You don't outrun grief. You can't just escape from a dark night of the soul. You have to drive through it…one courageous mile at a time.
Ed Rahill's life has veered off course, and while he dreams of becoming the man his Grandmother taught him to be, he's become haunted by losing the love of his life, and is struggling to have faith in himself.
With his foot on the pedal of GT's since he was a young boy, he enters an outlaw road race across America in the tradition of a Cannonball Run.
Ed and his partner Tim didn't think they stood a chance to win — "We just didn't want to give up on ourselves." Facing the most aggressive, nationwide highway patrol effort in U.S. history, Rahill was presented with the choice we all face at some time in our lives: succumb to our fears of failure and inadequacy, or find the fortitude to go on and leave the world a better place because we are here.
This story is about more than the thrill of speeding through the New Mexico desert at 140mph+. It's about survival, redemption, and discovering who you are when everything else falls away. One Mile at a Time unfolds with heart-pounding adrenaline and deep emotional truth. From Boston to San Diego, Rahill's record-breaking journey becomes a meditation on life, purpose, and the pursuit of meaning in a fast-changing world.
