Sinossi

This book is a historical narrative of Drake's return from his Famous Voyage and the despatch of the formidable armament commemorated. Gilbert, who had been empowered by Elizabeth, in the year of Frobisher's last expedition, to found colonies in America, had sailed for that purpose to Newfoundland and had perished at sea on his way homeward. Raleigh, who had succeeded to his half-brother's enterprises, had dispatched his exploring expedition to 'Virginia,' under Amadas and Barlow, in 1584, and had followed it up in the next year with an actual colony. Drake's Great Armada left Plymouth in September of the same year. Elizabeth, knowing that the suppression of the insurrection in the Netherlands would be followed by an attack upon England, was dealing with the insurgents. They equipped an armada of twenty-five vessels, manned by 2,300 men, and despatched it under the command of Drake to plunder Spanish America.

There were, and still are, great restaurants all over Europe, but the greater part of Blue Trout and Black Truffles is devoted to the eatingplaces and vineyards of France. It is a vicarious experience to read about the culinary wonders of the notable establishments of another era that have become the last epicurean haven in this materialistic, mechanized world of fastfood chains and frozenfood dinners. Mr. Wechsberg reaches back to the twilight days of the Habsburg monarchy, when those splendid monuments to the haute cuisine in central Europe, Meissl and Schadn of Vienna and Gundel's of Budapest, were in their prime.

Discover the culinary heritage of America’s capitol with this guide to Washington, D.C.’s historic restaurants and storied local eateries.   While today’s foodies enjoy the latest culinary trends of Logan Circle and the H Street corridor, Washington's first true restaurants opened around 1830. Waves of immigrants introduced a global mix of ingredients to the capital’s eager palates by opening eateries like the venerable China Doll Gourmet and Cleveland Park's Roma Restaurant.   By the twentieth century, the variety and quality of cuisine was astounding. Diners could have tea at Garfinckel's Greenbrier or lunch at local favorites such as Little Tavern Diner or Ben's Chili Bowl. For an elegant evening, fine restaurants like Rive Gauche and the Monocle satisfied the most sophisticated gastronome.   With careful research and choice recipes, “Streets of Washington” blogger John DeFerrari chronicles the culinary and social history of the capital through its restaurants, tasting his way from the lavish Gilded Age dining halls of the Willard Hotel to the Hot Shoppe's triple-decker Mighty Mo.
