Sinossi

In "Four Years in Upper Burma," W. R. Winston presents a meticulous chronicle of his experiences while serving as an administrative officer in the remote regions of Burma during the late 19th century. The narrative is notable for its vivid descriptions and keen observations, effectively combining travel writing with ethnographic study. Winston's literary style is both accessible and insightful, employing a rich, descriptive language that immerses readers in the diverse landscapes and cultures of Upper Burma. The book also provides a poignant commentary on colonialism, revealing both the challenges and intricacies of British imperial administration in a complex social and political landscape. Winston, a dedicated colonial officer, drew upon his extensive firsthand experience to craft this compelling account. His background in administration and interpersonal relations significantly informed his writings, allowing him to portray local customs with respect and nuance. Engaging extensively with local peoples and environments, he sought to understand and document the significant socio-political changes occurring during his tenure, contributing to a body of work that reflects both personal and historical narratives of the era. I wholeheartedly recommend "Four Years in Upper Burma" to scholars, students, and any readers intrigued by the intersections of colonial history, travel literature, and cultural studies. Winston's reflections provide invaluable insights into the complexities of identity and governance, making this work a key contribution to the discourse surrounding British colonialism in Southeast Asia.

Most people believe that they were either benefited or at least not harmed by being brought into existence. Thus, if they ever do reflect on whether they should bring others into existence—rather than having children without even thinking about whether they should—they presume that they do them no harm. Better Never to Have Been challenges these assumptions. David Benatar argues that coming into existence is always a serious harm. Those who never exist cannot be deprived. However, by coming into existence one does suffer quite serious harms that could not have befallen one had one not come into existence. Drawing on the relevant psychological literature, the author shows that there are a number of well-documented features of human psychology that explain why people systematically overestimate the quality of their lives and why they are thus resistant to the suggestion that they were seriously harmed by being brought into existence. The author then argues for the "anti-natal" view—that it is always wrong to have children—and he shows that combining the anti-natal view with common pro-choice views about fetal moral status yield a "pro-death" view about abortion. Although counter-intuitive for many, that implication is defended, not least by showing that it solves many conundrums of moral theory about population.

In Bringing Home the White House, Melissa Estes Blair introduces us to five fascinating yet unheralded women who were at the heart of campaigns to elect and reelect some of our most beloved presidents. By examining the roles of these political strategists in affecting the outcome of presidential elections, Blair sheds light on their historical importance and the relevance of their individual influence.

In the middle decades of the twentieth century both major political parties had Women's Divisions. The leaders of these divisions—five women who held the job from 1932 until 1958—organized tens of thousands of women all over the country, turning them into the "saleswomen for the party" by providing them with talking points, fliers, and other material they needed to strike up political conversations with their friends and neighbors. The leaders of the Women's Divisions also produced a huge portion of the media used by the campaigns—over 90 percent of all print material in the 1930s—and were close advisors of the presidents of both parties.

In spite of their importance, these women and their work have been left out of the narratives of midcentury America. In telling the story of these women, Blair reveals the ways that women were central to American politics from the depths of the Great Depression to the height of the Cold War.

Urban design is the process of shaping the physical features of cities, towns, and villages. It is a discipline that integrates various elements such as architecture, planning, landscaping, and sociology to create functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable urban spaces. As cities continue to grow and evolve, urban design becomes increasingly important in ensuring that urban areas meet the needs of both current and future generations. This chapter introduces the concept of urban design, its historical development, and its significant role in modern cities.
The history of urban design can be traced back to ancient civilizations where urban planning was guided by principles of geometry, religion, and governance. The layout of cities such as Ancient Rome and Greek cities was often designed with grand structures, forums, and public spaces to reflect social hierarchies and civic values. Over time, as cities grew larger and more complex, the role of urban design evolved. In the modern era, the Industrial Revolution brought about rapid urbanization, with a focus on accommodating large populations and facilitating economic growth. However, this period also led to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions that highlighted the need for better planning and design to improve quality of life.
Urban design today is centered around creating environments that are not only functional but also enhance the well-being of their inhabitants. It involves a multidisciplinary approach that considers various factors such as traffic flow, pedestrian access, environmental sustainability, and social equity. The goals of urban design are to create places that are safe, accessible, inclusive, and beautiful. This requires careful consideration of the built environment, including buildings, streets, public spaces, and infrastructure, as well as the natural environment, such as green spaces, waterways, and ecosystems.

Conversations about abortion often center on the question: Are you pro-life or pro-choice? But what if that's the wrong question?
Drawing upon the life and teachings of Jesus, Becoming ProGrace invites Christians to ask new questions, such as:What if conversations about abortion didn't have to feel so tense, divided, or dehumanizing? What does it mean to affirm the image of God in every person involved? How do we navigate tension we may feel when our deepest Christian values seem to conflict? What would it take for Christian communities to become spaces of empathy, listening, and grace?
Including insights and personal stories from Christians of diverse denominational backgrounds and political perspectives, Becoming ProGrace articulates a uniquely Christian response to abortion that calls us to take on the character of Christ rather than trying to change others, offering a much-needed message of hope for our divided world.

Sojourner Truth was an American abolitionist and women's rights activist. Truth was born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son in 1828, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man.

She gave herself the name Sojourner Truth in 1843 after she became convinced that God had called her to leave the city and go into the countryside "testifying the hope that was in her.
The Icon Black Lives Matter Series

Truth was from New York and grew up speaking Dutch as her first language. During the Civil War, Truth helped recruit black troops for the Union Army; after the war, she tried unsuccessfully to secure land grants from the federal government for formerly enslaved people (summarized as the promise of "forty acres and a mule"). She continued to fight on behalf of women and African Americans until her death.

Truth dedicated her life to fighting for a more equal society for African Americans and for women, including abolition, voting rights, and property rights.
