Sinossi

First published in 1919, “The Journal of a Disappointed Man” is the first volume of published journal entries by English naturalist and diarist Bruce Frederick Cummings, writing under the pseudonym W. N. P. Barbellion.
“The Journal of a Disappointed Man” was described by its author as "a study in the nude". The book was originally optioned by Collins, who eventually rejected the book because they feared the "lack of morals" shown by Barbellion would damage their reputation. An editor's note at the very end of the book claims Barbellion died on 31 December 1917, but Cummings in fact lived for nearly two more years.

The preface of the book by H.G. Wells led some reviewers to believe the journal was a work of fiction by Wells himself; Wells publicly denied this but the true identity of "Barbellion" was not known by the public until after Cummings' death.

Begun when its author was 13 years old, the Journal at first catalogues Barbellion's misadventures in the Devon countryside - collecting birds' eggs, spying girls through binoculars - but evolves into a deeply moving account of his struggle with poverty, his lack of formal education, his flailing attempts at love, and most harrowing of all his slow death from multiple sclerosis.
Yet, for all its excruciating honesty, W.N.P. Barbellion has an extraordinary lust for life. As Zeppelins loomed above the streets of South Kensington, the humour and beauty he found in the world around him - in music, friendship, nature and love - deepens not just the tragedy of his own life, but the millions of lives lost during the First World War.

    Breaking the Rules

Leading with heart, authenticity, and purpose, Thomas Vozzo provides a clear path to a new bottom line—including 55 rules to break—bringing the Homeboy Way to life as the perfect antidote to the massive tidal currents of social injustice and inequities.

By every traditional measurement of success, Vozzo was a clear winner. In his world of billion-dollar revenues and million-dollar profits, he knew exactly what shareholders wanted and how to get it for them.

Then, through a series of fateful events, Vozzo landed as CEO of Homeboy Industries, the most successful gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the country, founded by Jesuit priest Greg Boyle. “I arrived at Homeboy at a time when I needed to
learn more about myself and my life’s journey,” Vozzo writes. “And after 8 years of working with the poor, forgotten, and demonized people of our society, I’ve come to learn that I didn’t really know as much about life as I thought.”

Vozzo’s enlightening journey leads to his recognition that a radical approach is needed in business and in life: “What Homeboy has taught me is that we need to do business differently. … We need to bust up the system, swim upstream, avoid herd mentality.”

Blending personal stories of his day-to-day with Fr. Greg and the homies along with counterintuitive business ideas that are changing lives for the better, Vozzo shows you how you can live, lead, and shake things up with kinship, determination, compassion, and grit.

    That’s the Homeboy Way.

Are you ready to embark on a transformative and life-changing journey towards elite performance and genuine success?
In Drop The Act: The Inside Secrets For Elite Performance, renowned psychologist and performance specialist Kate Glancey delves into the secrets of champions, and unveils the path less travelled by those who achieve unparalleled success.
As Kate explains, elite performance is often only considered in the realm of sporting superstars, CEOs, world-class musicians and those who reach the dizzying heights of their chosen profession. However, when we peel back the layers of façade and dive into the heart of authenticity, we can discover the place inside us where the true power to excel resides.
Today, we are a society of disconnected individuals who are living through our mind instead of our heart. This tendency to live in the mind, in a place of thought rather than being guided by the pure energy of our soul, is the greatest challenge and barrier to uncovering your inner wisdom and power. In her signature story-telling style, Kate guides you towards uncovering that hidden potential that lies beneath the act you present to the world. Packed with practical exercises and insightful tips, this book shows you how to drop the act once and for all, and be the person you were born to be.
Most people assume the words ‘elite’ and ‘performer’ can only be applied to a select few, but as Kate explains, we are all performers in our own lives. Whether you are a mum, a dad, a wife, a husband, a partner, or a friend – or a player, an academic, an employee or an employer, we are all performing in life. And we all have the potential within us to fulfil our purpose and achieve genuine success and happiness.

Dad thinks lots of things are right-wing. He even thinks He-Man is right-wing. I ask Dad who we are and he says left-wing. Left is opposite to right. If right is bad, then we’re the opposite of that, which means we’re good.
It’s post-independence Zimbabwe and an atmosphere of nostalgia hangs over much of Harare’s remaining white community. Hayden Eastwood grows up in a family that sets itself apart, distinguishing themselves from Rhodie-Rhodies through their politics: left is good; right is bad.
Within the family’s free and easy approach to life, Hayden and his younger brother, Dan, make a pact to never grow up, to play hide and seek and build forts forever, and to never, ever be interested in girls. But as Hayden and Dan develop as teenagers, and the chemicals of adolescence begin to stir, their childhood pact starts to unravel. And with the arrival of Sarah in their lives, the two brothers find themselves embroiled in an unspoken love triangle. While Sarah and Hayden spend increasing amounts of time together, Dan is left alone to deal with feelings of rejection and the burden of hidden passion, and the demise of a youthful promise brings with it a wave of destruction.
Laced with humour, anger and sadness, Like Sodium in Water is an account of a family in crisis and an exploration of how we only abandon the lies we tell ourselves when we have no other option.
