Sinossi

In "More Cargoes," W. W. Jacobs continues to enchant readers with his signature blend of humor and maritime adventure. This collection of short stories revolves around the lives of sailors and the peculiarities of life at sea, showcasing Jacobs's deft storytelling and vibrant characterizations. With a rich narrative style that balances wit and pathos, Jacobs vividly captures the essence of early 20th-century maritime life, steeped in the lore and language of seafaring. From comical misadventures to more poignant reflections, the collection highlights the unpredictability of the ocean and the human spirit's resilience against it. W. W. Jacobs, born in 1863, was greatly influenced by his own experiences growing up in London, close to the bustling docks. His background, coupled with a natural affinity for storytelling, provided him with a wealth of material for his writings. Jacobs's earlier works established him as a prominent figure in British literature, and the intuitive humor present in "More Cargoes" reflects his understanding of the common man's struggles and triumphs, particularly in the context of maritime culture. This delightful anthology is highly recommended for readers who appreciate a blend of humor, adventure, and keen observations of human nature. Jacobs's ability to immerse readers in the world of sailors makes "More Cargoes" not only entertaining but also a poignant reflection on life's unpredictability. Whether you are a long-time fan of Jacobs or new to his work, this collection promises to leave a lasting impression.

What if the greatest risk in love isn’t rejection… but being truly seen? In "Mr. and Mrs. Dove", masterfully written by Katherine Mansfield, a simple marriage proposal becomes a delicate psychological dance of fear, pride, and unspoken longing. Reggie, painfully shy and uncertain, has one last chance to confess his feelings before leaving England for good. Anne is poised, admired, and emotionally guarded - a woman who questions whether love must mean surrender. Between them flutter two doves, symbols of devotion… or quiet submission. As tension lingers beneath polite conversation, Katherine Mansfield reveals the fragile power balance hidden inside romance itself. Who leads? Who follows? And what does it truly mean to belong to someone? Elegant, intimate and emotionally piercing, this story captures the trembling moment where hope and vulnerability collide. Press play now and step into a world where every silence speaks - and every heartbeat carries the weight of a life-changing choice.

Boule de Suif (1880) is a short story by the late-19th century French writer Guy de Maupassant. It is arguably his most famous short story, and is the title story for his collection on the Franco-Prussian War, entitled "Boule de Suif et Autres Contes de la Guerre" ("Boule de Suif and Other Stories of the War"). John Ford said that his film Stagecoach was in many ways a western rewrite of Boule de Suif. (Summary by Wikipedia)

This is the first story I ever got paid for; the second story I ever got published; and maybe the thirtieth or fortieth story I wrote. I had been writing poetry and fiction ever since my brother Ted, tired of having an illiterate five-year-old sister around, taught me to read. At about twenty I began sending things off to publishers. Some of the poetry got printed, but I didn’t get systematic about sending out the fiction till I was getting on to thirty. It kept systematically coming back.
“April in Paris” was the first “genre” piece—recognizably fantasy or science fiction—that I had written since 1942, when I wrote an Origin-of-Life-on-Earth story for Astounding, which for some inconceivable reason rejected it (I never did synch with John Campbell). At age twelve I was very pleased to get a genuine printed rejection slip, but by age thirty-two I was very pleased to get a check. “Professionalism” is no virtue; a professional is simply one who gets paid for doing what an amateur does for love. But in a money economy, the fact of being paid means your work is going to be circulated, is going to be read; it’s the means to communication, which is the artist’s goal. Cele Goldsmith Lalli, who bought this story in 1962, was as enterprising and perceptive an editor as the science fiction magazines have ever had, and I am grateful to her for opening the door to me.

Series Placement: Timeless Terrors No. 84
Series Format: Part 1 of 12
    Description:
At the Mountains of Madness is one of H. P. Lovecraft’s most influential works of cosmic horror—a vast and unsettling account of forbidden knowledge, ancient civilizations, and humanity’s fragile place in an uncaring universe. This narration marks Part One of a 12-part series, with new installments released regularly.
The story begins with a Miskatonic University expedition to Antarctica, undertaken in the name of scientific discovery. What initially appears to be a routine research mission soon uncovers evidence of an impossibly ancient presence buried beneath the ice—one that predates humanity and defies all conventional understanding.
Central to the tale is Lovecraft’s vision of cosmic insignificance. As the expedition pushes deeper into the polar wasteland, reason and science prove inadequate in the face of revelations that threaten not only the explorers’ sanity, but humanity’s understanding of its own origins.
Rather than relying on constant action, Lovecraft builds horror through atmosphere, scale, and the gradual unveiling of terrifying truths. Narrated by Amazon-bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the story’s mounting dread, intellectual unease, and slow-burn descent into cosmic terror.
At the Mountains of Madness endures as a cornerstone of Lovecraftian fiction—a chilling reminder that some knowledge is better left buried, and that the universe is far older, stranger, and more hostile than we dare imagine.
