Summary

Honor-Based Commitments explores the critical role of promise-keeping and personal accountability in shaping societies and individual character. It examines the historical evolution of honor codes across different cultures, from ancient civilizations to modern times, revealing how societies have defined and enforced these principles. Readers will discover how upholding commitments builds trust, strengthens relationships, and fosters social stability, while broken promises erode these vital foundations. The book delves into the philosophical underpinnings of moral obligation, drawing from ethical frameworks like deontology and virtue ethics to understand why honoring commitments is considered a moral imperative. It demonstrates how adherence to, or violation of, promises has had significant consequences throughout history, shaping political and military strategies, impacting economic development, and creating ethical dilemmas. By integrating historical analysis with philosophical reflection, the book offers a nuanced exploration of the complexities inherent in fulfilling commitments. The book progresses systematically, beginning with core concepts and moving through case studies to demonstrate that a commitment to one's word is essential for a just and prosperous society and is key to personal well-being, especially in an era marked by cynicism and eroding trust. It provides a balanced perspective, acknowledging competing viewpoints and supporting claims with credible sources, making it a valuable resource for anyone interested in history, ethics, and leadership.

Thanks to countless written sources and corroborating archaeological evidence, the chronology of the ancient Near East is fairly well-known by modern scholars, but as with most periods in history, there are exceptions. In ancient Mesopotamia’s otherwise well-documented history, there were two dynasties that historians and archaeologists are only now beginning to understand: the Sealand I, or First Sealand Dynasty (c. 1742-1460 BCE), and the Sealand II, or Second Sealand Dynasty (c. 1025-1005 BCE). These dynasties are named after the way they are referred to in ancient texts, and they likely originated in the marshy region of southern Mesopotamia. The texts mentioning these dynasties documented them as legitimate Babylonian dynasties for the most part, but few details are ever related about the dynasties or their rulers, even though both dynasties coincided with periods when there was a lack of central power in Mesopotamia and the Sealand dynasties were briefly able to assume control of the city of Babylon itself.
The ephermal nature of Sealand’s rule is not completely understood by experts, to the extent that all kinds of aspects of these dynasties remain open to debate. Ancient sources provide an outline of these dynasties, as well as some information concerning major events, but the nature of the Sealand government, how the people lived, and even where their cities were located (if any existed) all remain unclear. Due to problems with sources, scholars have largely avoided the Sealand dynasties and the topic of the Sealand in general in favor of better-documented periods in Mesopotamian history. That being said, some recent archaeological discoveries have helped provide a base for future research that may solve some of these riddles.

As an adult with ADHD, you've probably spent a lifetime trying to prove you're capable. You may work twice as hard to keep up, apologize for being "too much," or pretend you're fine when you're really overwhelmed. Growing up with ADHD often means internalizing years of criticism, misunderstanding, and shame. Over time, those messages can become part of how you see yourself. So how can you heal the echoes of these old wounds, trust your own mind, and feel safe being exactly who you are?

Inside ADHD offers a validating, neuroaffirming approach to understanding and healing yourself using internal family systems (IFS). Rather than trying to "fix" ADHD, psychologist Carol Shilliday shows how years of stigma can create protective parts that overwork, over plan, shut down, or self-criticize. With practical insights, she guides you to meet those parts with compassion and invite your calm, confident Self to lead.

Inside, you'll learn how to: understand the roots of self-criticism, perfectionism, and shame; heal emotional wounds and reconnect with your authentic Self; discover strengths in your ADHD brain—and build systems that fit you; and develop self-compassion, flexibility, and inner calm in daily life
You'll also learn to recognize the protective "manager" and "firefighter" parts shaped by years of criticism, release perfectionism and self-judgment, and uncover the creativity, persistence, and intuition within your ADHD wiring. Grounded in practical IFS tools, reflection prompts, and real-life experience, Inside ADHD helps you move beyond self-blame and toward wholeness, self-awareness, and self-acceptance.

    Kingmakers - How Power in...

For a medieval English king, delegation was a necessary evil; and nowhere more necessary – nor more potentially disastrous – than on the Anglo-Welsh borders. The Marcher lords first empowered by William I were relied upon by subsequent Norman and Plantagenet kings to protect the dangerous frontiers of the realm.

In Wales, as in Ireland, the smaller size and military weakness of divided neighbouring states encouraged conquest, with the seized lands enhancing the power of the aggressive English lords. They were granted ever greater authority by the monarch, to the point where they believed they ruled like kings. They intermarried, schemed for extra lands and snatched power in a complex and often violent political process. Owing to their resources and unparalleled military effectiveness, they soon came to overawe kings and dominate national events.

The strength of the Marcher lords would come to the fore at numerous times in the nation’s history in the shape of notorious figures such as Simon de Montfort and Roger Mortimer. The civil war of King Stephen’s reign, the baronial resistance to King John, the overthrow of Edward II and Richard II; all of these crises turned upon the involvement of the lords of the Marches. Timothy Venning explores their mentality and reveals the dramatic careers both of those who prospered from their loyalty to the king and those whose power was gained by treachery – from the Norman Conquest to the beginnings of the Tudor dynasty.

How to Focus - A Monastic Guide...

Distraction isn't a new problem. We're also not the first to complain about how hard it is to concentrate. Early Christian monks beat us to it. They had given up everything to focus on God, yet they still struggled to keep the demons of distraction at bay. But rather than surrender to the meandering of their minds, they developed powerful strategies to improve their attention and engagement. How to Focus is an inviting collection of their strikingly relatable insights and advice—frank, funny, sympathetic, and psychologically sophisticated.

This wisdom is drawn from John Cassian's Collationes, one of the most influential manuals for monks from late antiquity. The Collationes follow Cassian and his friend Germanus as they travel around Egypt, asking a series of sage monks how they can make their minds stronger. In response, these monks offer a range of techniques for increasing focus, including setting goals, training the body, managing the memory, using mantras, taking breaks, consulting others—and, most of all, being honest about yourself. As Cassian and Germanus eventually realize, we can't escape distraction—but we can learn how to confront it and, eventually, to concentrate.

Featuring an engaging new translation by Jamie Kreiner, How to Focus can help even the least monkish of us to train our attention on what matters most.
